November, 1945 CHANUKAH: 1945 By BERNARD LERNER Copyright 1945 by Independent Jewish Press Service, Inc. * Let us take a world tour of this occasion of Chanukah, 1945! The enemy is vanquished. In Belsen the killers of a third of our people faced trial. They were arrogant, defiant, and had reason to be. The allied cause provid ed them with defense attorneys, one of whom modestly describ ed himself as a “mouthpiece for them, labelling the Jews “dregs of the ghetto”, whose death was little loss to the world, and ex pressing the “objective” opinion that, after all, the torture of Eu ropean Jewry may not have been such a terrible crime —for the torturers had scientific ends in mind. They used the Jews as guinea pigs, thus probably ben efiting science. What better fate can a Jew expect, than to be a guinea pig for German science? Let us remember on this Chan ukah the hate-fomenting address of Foreign Secretary Bevin, who admonished the guinea pigs of Nazi experiments in science and imperialistic solutions not to “get ahead of the queue.” Let us remember on this Chan ukah the plight of the Jews in camps in Germany. 1 Yesterday’s death camps are still death camps. This time it is slow death, by attrition, moral as well as physical. Correspondents tell the story of cpffin-size lebensraum al lotted to the Jews in Germany by the Allied authorities. Their conditions, temporarily improv ed following the Harrison report and the admonitions of Eisenhow er, have again deteriorated. Chanukah, 1945. Jews fleeing from Poland, where the Govern ment’s intentions are good, but the intentions of the populace, and its actions, are still unchang ed, in its great Christian zeal stimulated by anxiety lest there still remain somewhere a distant uncrucified kin of Christ. Chanukah, 1945. Holiday of Jewish liberation. Jews, scatter ed over the map of Europe, “lib erated” Jews, are pleading in vain for admission into Palestine, in some cases fighting in vain against repatriation. Chanukah, 1945. The Mufti of Jerusalem, harbored in France, coddled by the imperialism of France and Britain, has been elected Chairman of the recon stituted Arab Higher Committee, through the intercession of the Arab League. No act of defiance this. The League is Britain’s creation. The League has receiv- CHANUKAH GREETINGS ★ Edenfield Jewelry Co. 30 W. FORSYTH ST. Palestine Jew ry is the heir of the Maccabees in no metaphorical sense, but in a very real and grim sense. It has a job on its hands more try ing than that of the Maccabees. It has on its hands, not alone a fight against the enemy trying to suppress the Jewish people in its own homeland, but the additional job of assembling Jews from all over the world, victims of Eu ropean and Arab Nazism and sanctimonious British socialist imperialism into Palestine, des pite all barriers. It isn’t the oil in the Temple’s lamps that is running low, as in the days of the Maccabess. It is Jewish life that is running out rapidly* the world over. Will the Jews overcome the tremendous obstacles? The answer is partly dependent on us. Will we con tinue applauding pledges made in bad faith, and hail as humanitar ian every kind of political evas ion by vote-baiters? Lives are dependent upon our behavior. PRIDE CAN SAVE US! Corp. mm THE SOUTHERN JEWISH MONTHLY Do Palestine Jews Have “Piece of Atom Bomb?” TEL AVIV, (JTA) From three sources this week came the story of how recently a group of Arabs visited the Jewish set tlement at Kfar Saba and said to its leaders: “Let’s roast a lamb and hold a peace festival” (the traditional Arab ceremony signalling the end of hostilities). The surprised Jewish settlers asked, as one man: “But why? we had one two months ago.” Since the Arabs insisted, the lamb was roasted and the peace festival duly celebrated. Subsequently, the Jews of Kfar Saba learned the reason for the Arabs’ insistence. The Arabs had heard that the Jews had a “piece of the atomic bomb,” and they wanted to determine the truth or otherwise of that report. One Jew who told the story said: “We let them believe it. Why shouldn’t we?” Chanukah Greetings FRANCO - AMERICAN BEAUTY SALON For the finest in Beauty Work whether it’s a mani cure, a permanent or a se ries of slenderizing treat ments. 29 W.
