Hillel Chanukah Week - End Celebration Hillel students from the Uni versity of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, will be guests of Hillel at F. S. C. W. PROGRAM FRIDAY EVENING, NOV. 30— Hillel Chanukah Services con ducted by girls of Hillel under direction of cultural Chairman Ruth Leonard. Sermon of evening by Leo Osheroff of the Hillel Foundation at the U. of Fla. on subject “Chan ukah Thru the Ages to Hillel.” He will be introduced by Miss Sonya Heyman, president of Hillel of Tallahassee. Chanukah Oneg Shabbat follows services supervised by Miss Irene Gross, chairman of social committee. SATURDAY EVENING, DE CEMBER Ist: Chanukah Program: 1— Candle lighting ceremony on huge 4’ by 6’ Hillel Chanukah Menorah by Hillel choir, led by Miss Sarah Bramister, choir lead er. The choir will sing the Chanukah round, “Mi Yemalel” and then chant the Blessings of the Candles. Miss Bramister will sing “Haneros Halolu” and the audience joins in singing “Rock of Ages.” 2 Chanukah play, “What Hap pened on Chanukah,” by Hillel Dramatic Society. Directed by Miss Shirley Barrish and assisted by Miss Esther Barrish, both of West Palm Beach. A drama. CAST: Delores Spitzer, Joyce Rosenthal, Ina Gotler, Elaine Roth, Phyllis Paul, Gladys Atlas, Miriam Portnoy, Joyce Treger, Sarah Bramister, Rosalyn Geiser man, Theresa Davis. 3 Chanukah play “Chanukah - A 1945 Version will be by Hillel Foundation at U. of Fla. CAST: Bernard Mezritch, Alan Westin, Murray Schecter, Leo Osheroff and others. 4 Solo on Accordian, Claire Brown of Miami. 5 Chanukah delicacies and dance follow program. The recreation center will be decorated with Chanukah sym bols, with twenty large “Dreid lach” suspended from ceiling. SUNDAY MORNING, DECEM BER 2ND. at 10:00 A. M—Chanu kah Religious Service and Break fast. Arranged by social com mittee. THE SOUTHERN JEWISH MONTHLY Service led by Stanley Fatel man of Hillel at U. of Fla. Traditional Chanukah break fast, latkes, applesauce, etc., etc. SUNDAY AFTERNOON, DE CEMBER 2ND.: Chanukah picnic at home of Mrs. Sam Rosenberg. Chanukah games led by Miss Henrietta Greenberg, Hillel faculty advisor and instructor of Physical Education at College. All Hillel girls and Hillel boys from Gainesville to participate in above program. 12,707 Jews Enter Palestine During Past Year A total of 12,707 Jewish im migrants holding Palestine cer tificates reached Palestine during the year ending September 30, 1945. Eighteen transit camps were established and instructors were sent to help in the im mediate rehabilitation of the new arrivals. Vocational training and financial assistance were provid ed by the Jewish Agency, which spent approximately $1,000,000 for the maintenance of the new immigrants during the first days following their arrival. The Jew ish Agency receives the support of American Jewry through the United Palestine Appeal. The Jewish Agency Medical Office spent $160,000 for care of invalid immigrants. Some $2,000,000 was expended for housing of the new comers, with 73% of them re ceiving housing accommodations from the Jewish Agency. 5,700 persons were settled in agricultur al colonies, the remainder in cities. Last week a transport of 1,003 Jewish immigrants from Poland, Hungary and Rumania reached the Jewish National Home, including 180 orphans from Transnistria and 225 from Ruma nia. Chanukah Candles Shipped to Jews In German Camps Over one thousand complete sets of Chanukah candles were shipped last week for the Jewish refugees in the liberated con centration camps in Germany and Austria by the Refugee-Immigra tion Division of Agudath Israel Youth Council of America, 113 West 42nd Street, New York. Special arrangements were made to assure that the Chanukah candles be received before the Holiday, through the unique chan nels of chaplains and servicemen utilized by Agudath Israel Youth Council in its relief work for those areas.
