Chanukah--The Feast of Lights
November 30--December 7, 1945
This year the festival of Chan
ukah (Dedication Days) falls on
Thursday evening at sundown, No
vember 29th. The festival is cele
brated with lighting of lights from
November twenty-ninth through
December the sixth, in commem
oration of the rededication of the
Temple at Jerusalem by the vic
torious Maccabees, 165 B.C.E.
The Maccabean struggle was
against the Syrian Greek King
Antiochus who, with the aid of
the Quislings of those days tried
to destroy the Jewish religion and
the worship of one God. So im
portant was this struggle that
ethical Monotheism owes its ex
istence to this historic event. The
festival is one of the most beau
tiful and most significant of fes
tivals of any faith. Without this
victory neither Mohammedanism,
Judaism or Christianity could
have survived. In recognition of
this fact, the Catholic qhurch

CHAW REPORT TO NATIONAL JEWISH WELFARE BOARD
celebrated Judas Maccabeus day
on August the tenth for several
centuries during the Christian
Era.
Chanukah is mainly a home
festival. Services are held in the
Synagogue and Religious Schools.
There is the exchange of gifts,
and children are presented with
a Chanukah Menorah or eight
branched candlestick so that they
may light one candle each night
until there are eight to recall the
eight days of rededication of the
Temple.
