The coming week-end promises
to be a busy one . . . Friday even
ing there will be a joint service
of the Temple and Center in the
Temple . . . Saturday the dance
sponsored by the Community
Council will take place in the May
flower Hotel to which the entire
community is invited . . . And Sun
day afternoon is the United Jew
ish Appeal Luncheon and joint
conference with Savannah . . .
Sunday evening will see the Young
Judaean Purim Carnival in the
Jewish Center starting at 5 o’clock
. . . We understand ,too, that the
Jewish Temple Sunday School will
have its Purim party Sunday af
ternoon . . .

Conventions always have their
stories but I recently heard a tale
that bears repeating . . . This one
might be called A Tree Grows in
Palestine . . .
One of our most ardent conven
tion-goers is I. M. (Pop) Leiber
man, whose varied interests lead
him to conventions and confer
ences on the Eastern Seaboard and
in the South . . . One of these ex
cursions led him to Memphis, Ten
nessee, a few years ago at a meet
ing of Southern Zionists, and there
he made the acquaintance of one
of the South’s outstanding doctors.
. . . The friendship was renewed
this fall when Mr. Leiberman
journeyed to New Orleans for a
physical examination . . . Although
Mr. Leiberman was recuperating
from a recent automobile accident
he found that he could not stay
away from the J. D. C. convention
which was being held in New Or
leans at that time . . . There he
again met the doctor . . . Later in
the week “Pop” ran into his friend
at the clinic where he was under
going treatment and the doctor
was called in to give his diagnosis.
... It was quite a satisfactory
diagnosis we are glad to report...
The story, however, comes in
the payoff, for this is the bill that
the doctor exacted from “Pop”.
. . . that Mr Leiberman plant a
tree in Palestine once a month for
the next twenty five years in
honor of the Joint Distribution
Committee . . .
Mr. Leiberman has accepted the
bill and each month the Joint Dis
tribution Committee national of
fice will receive a tree certificate
purchased by I. M. Leiberman
from Jacksonville Senior Hadas
sah ... So do two men honor two
movements in Jewish life. . . .
But wait . . . the story has a
sequel . . . the tree chairman of
Jacksonville Senior Hadassah is

Mah-Jong-Show-Dance triple at
traction night . . . and we under
stand it packed them in . . .
But speaking of benefits we
wish to present an orchid to the
Jewish Center Men’s Club and
Herb Sandler on their Monte Carlo
Night held last Sunday . . . Al
though gaming tables and games
was the motif of the night no act
ual money crossed the table and
winnings could only be taken away
in merchandise which was auc
tioned off . .. Only script money
was used in playing . . . The whole
event was carried off on a high
plane while a good time was had
by all . . .
At the same time congratula
tions to the extension division of
the Community Council for not
permitting adult organizations to
use their newly completed Youth
quarters on Forsyth street for
card games involving chips and
money.

LIFE WILL BE PRODUCED
Eddie Cantor will produce a film
dealing with his life and career,
and negotiations are nearing the
signing stage with a major studio,
reportedly Columbia, for produc
tion and distribution. The picture
has the working title of “The
Eddie Cantor Story.” When Eddie
Cantor completes his current RKO
film, “If You Knew Susie,” he will
begin making recordings with the
Victor Young orchestra on sixteen
tunes he made famous. The songs
will be used in the forthcoming
picture and dubbed in as in “The
Jolson Story.”

to Roumania. I appealed to the
American government and the
American people to send urgent
relief supplies for distribution to
Jew and non-Jew, sufferers alike
of the worst drought in the history
of our country. The government’s
decision to dispatch such food
shipments and medical supplies
will save the lives of thousands of
people, old and young. Before re
turning to my country. I should
like to express my thanks to the
United States for its humane con
sideration. I should also like to
voice my thanks for the splendid
help given my mission by the
