R. WILSON THE JEWISH QUIZ BOX BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright, 1947, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) QUESTION: What is “Lag B'Onier" (occuring this year on Thursday, May Bth) ? ANSWER: The period of time that elapses between the Passover and the Pentecost Holidays is a J period of forty-nine days. Those days are observed by ritualistic- I ally counting each day on the ! evening before. They are days in ' which marriages and any sort of [merrymaking is prohibited, re -1 sembling. in this sense, somewhat i of a mourning period. The thirty third day of this period is called ! “Lag B'Omer." a term which means the “thirty-third (day) of the (counting of the Omer) and is observed as a “semi-holiday” during which the restrictions that are imposed for the entire period are relaxed. QUESTION: Why was this day of “Ijtg B’Omer'* made a holiday? ANSWER: A number of reas ons are advanced for this. The main theory connects it with the reason for which the other sur rounding days are -lays of semi mourning. During this forty-nine day period it is claimed that twenty-four thousand of Rabbi Akiba’s disciples were killed in : the famous Bar-Kochba rebellion against the Roman Legions (Tal- i mild Babli-Yebamot 62a 1 for jew- THE SOUTHERN JEWISH WEEKLY isli independence in Palestine, which occurred about the year 130 C. E. It is claimed that either the killing stopped on The thirty third day or that the killing was done on interspersed days which numbered thirty-three in all. For this reason, it is claimed that the ! thirty-third day was established ! as a minor holiday, in anniversary of the end of the slaughter. Another reason advanced for this festival is that Manna, the heavenly food that was given to the Israelites in the desert, began to appear on this day, giving cause for rejoicing. Still another reason is advanced for this festi val. The Kabbalists associate it with the celebration of the “death-anniversary” of Rabbi Sim eon ben Yochai. the reputed auth or of "Zohar,” the classic work of the Mystics. It is claimed that this saintly scholar rejoiced | when his day of death came, for | two reasons: Firstly, because I some had tried to put him to death before his time and he per- j sisted in dying a natural death, secondly, because of the Mystic j idea, that through his death har mony among the different worlds in the universe was brought about. QUESTION: How is this fest ival of “Lag B’Omer” observed? ANSWER: There is really no prescribed ritual for the observ ance of this day. Certain prayers of mournful and penitential na ture are omitted in the syna gogue. Marriages are permitted and all semblances of mourning j disappear. Children in the He brew schools and in the seminal y have special programs on this day. Nevertheless, the real fest ivity is to be noted in Palestine. The Jews of Sefad and the neigh boring settlements gather on this day near the village Merror.. where the Mystic scholar called “Tanna.” about whom to many strange stories are related, is as-. sumed to be buried. Special hymns of a Kabbalistic character are chanted and bonfires are lighted in the neighborhood of the traditional grave. School children prepare bows and arrows and practice shooting with them. R.
