Friday, May 16, 1947 M£J JEWS IN WOK' SPORTS lli tm&ss'mmssm — y evv Yorkers went all out to greet the Hapoel Soccer team at Yankee Stadium last Sunday afternoon. Despite rain which fell all day Saturday and Sun day, close to 44,000 .persons at tended the match between the Palestinian team and an all-star yew York eleven.. In 1926, 46,- 000 fans greeted the famous Hak oah eleven of Vienna. It was re ported that more than 61,000 tickets were actually sold for last Sunday’s game, 2,600 going to avid spectators in the heavy rain fall which preceeded the actual contest. The Hapoel squad looked very impressive in downing the New Yorkers 2-0. The visitors ex celled in the short passing game of Europe as contrasted to the long booting game displayed by the domestic club. Hapoel took command of the play right at the start and despite the slushy go ing afield and the rain soaked ball managed to give a highly successful performance. The game was decided in the first half when Hapoel scored both of its tallies. Itzhak Fried, center forward, sent the invaders ahead after nine minutes of play. Herb Meitner, outside right, came through with another marker some twenty minutes later. Yaakov Chodorov, nineteen year-old goalie, thrilled the cus tomers with his sensational work in the net. After the contest was iced ip the opening half the visitors fell into a clever defense during the latter half of the contest. Con sequently the Americans were held at bay by Chodorov who was given splendid help by left back Aryeh Habibi. Immediately after the game the Hapoel players left for Chicago on the first leg of their transcontinental tour. They will return to New York City in two weeks for another contest at Triborough Stadium. American soccer experts are withholding final judgment on the visitors until they are seen in ac tion a few more times. Most of the experts thought that the Americans were too polite and are anxious to see how the visit ors will do against the rough and tumble tactics of the Hapoel and Sparta all-star combination eleven which will play them in Soldier Field, Chicago. The more enthus iastic Jewish spectators are com paring the Palestinians to the Hakoahs of 1926 fame. At this time such a comparison is unfair to the visitors, many of whom are still young in the game. Izik Czeczyk, Hapoel inside left, chief playmaker, is easily good enough to make any all star combination. He has un canny knack and ability to con trol and pass the ball in the com plicated short passing game. We have a tra ditional ideal of brotherhood, re gardless of class, creed or color. Washington helped set the pat tern for the emancipation from intolerance of Americans, already stated in ringing terms in the Declaration of Independence, when he wrote to the Jewish congrega tion in Newport, Rhode Island, his famous leter advocating "to bigotry no sanction.” Jefferson, writing to his friends during his European visit, urged them to “go see for yourselves” what it means to live in America, away from narrow sectarian com munities, rigid caste systems, the fear of sovereigns, the absence of religious freedom. It was like breathing salt air again after liv ing in a closed, fetid room, to think of the liberties of America, he wrote. Jefferson missed greatly the sense of oneness, of brotherhood that he found among Americans out to create a new state. Today, it is this democratic co hesion that is our greatest strength and greatest protection. Working together as one people, without regard to class, creed or color, we have coordinated differ ent elements—not sacrificing the good in their pasts, but welding them together with a common vis ion of freedom. The American way of life is the way to progress through the util ization of every resource —not merely the natural ones of the earth, but of the greatest resource of our nation—the intelligence, the initiative, the productive pow er latent in every individual, re gardless of whether he is black or white, or worships in a Jewish or a Christian temple. Let us remember that when we ask ourselves what it means to follow the American way of life on “I Am An American Day.” ISIDOR REPPA, TAMPA, DIES Isidor Reppa, 82, 2107 Vs Mitch ell St., died at his home last week. Lehman Herbert Lehman, former Gover nor of New York, recently de clared: "Close to one million dis placed persons are confined in con centration-like camps in Europe. This number is composed of many religious faiths and many national ities. There are more than 600,000 Christians and 250,000 Jews. These people cannot or will not return to the countries of their origin. They look upon their native lands as cemeteries of everything that is nearest and dearest to them—their families and hopes and ideals. Every human instinct calls us to rescue these uprooted people. Let us ask Congress for emergency im migration measures to welcome our share.” Just now the impossible is necessary. To appeal to men’s self-interest is not to their best interest.
