THE JEWISH QUIZ BOX BT RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright, 1947, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) QUESTION: What Is the origin of the practice of Circumcision ? ANSWER: Whether the Jews were the first people to practice the ritual is rather questionable in view of historical data pointing to the practice of circumcision in many primitive cultures. The Jews are generally regarded as the first to standardize the custom into a regulated national proced ure. Our own sources for this custom are the verses in Genesis <especially XVTI.II) that regard i the matter of circumcision as a' sign of the Covenant between the descendants of Abraham ar.d G-d. Kohler has gathered evidence to show that circumcision in its most LISTINGS WANTED! We Have Boyers Waiting PERRY FREEMAN REAL ESTATE 1438 .Miami Rd. QUESTION: What are the rea sons and advantages of this rite that make it so imperative in Jewish observance? ANSWER: We have stated in answer to the previous question that the Bible looks upon this rite as the symbol of the" Covenant between G-d and the People of Israel. This seems to be the basic Jewish reason. Through the ages.: however, many other reasons have been added to give meaning and purpose to the rite which seems to be both the oldest and the most widely performed surgical oper ation known. Writers like Philo. Josephus and Saadia have found in this ritual a hygienic motive. This is borne out by late medical analysis. The overhanging fore skin is a breeding place for germs which often lead to infection. , Medical investigation has shown • that a person who is not circum cized is subject to a malady term- j ed Phimosis < inability to with -1 draw the foreskin whenever nec essary i. This condition leads to I many other troubles. In extreme cases gangrene and ulceration have been traced to this difficulty. Maimonodies has seen in this custom a prevention of excessive lust. Some have seen in Circum cision a sacrifical symbol. Rosen weig was so impressed with the < practice that he recommended in *5.8 that the entire Prussian army be circumcised. The Bible itself has many a time clad the ritiial with a deep spiritual signif icance. For example the statement in Deuteronomy (X, 16) “Circum cize the foreskin of your heart” j displays the act of circumcision r.ot only as the cleansing of the body but as a symbol of the cleansing of the soul.
