No Pretty Girls Wanted
BY LEON GUTTERMAN
(Copyright 1947, JTA)
The Hollywood beauty market
is glutted, according to Irving
Rapper, who directs many of the
most important pictures for War
ner Bros. “There are too many
beautiful girls in Hollywood right,
now,” he says. “There is no room
for more.”
Irving, who has directed such
smash hits as “Rhapsody In Blue,”
"Adventures of Mark Twain” and
most of the Bette Davis films,
came to this startling conclusion
from his experience in picking ex
tra girls and bit players for scenes
in his new picture, “The Voice
of the Turtle.”
“The other day, he says, “we
were making a night club scene
and all the girls who were sent
to me to appear as extras, were
beautiful. ‘This has got to stop,’
I said. ‘There’s no night club
in the world that has beautiful
customers exclusively in the
floor show, maybe, but not at the
tables.’ ”
That, he says, is only one ex
ample of the situation. It hap
pened to him another time dur
ing the same picture, when all
the extra girls for a street scene
were young and shapely and at
tractive. “It’s wonderful,” he
continues, “but it’s also alarm
ing. You can’t go on making
pictures with nothing but pretty
girls. It isn’t natural, that’s all.”
If the influx of beauty to Hol
lywood continues at its present
rate, Rapper forsees dire future
for the picture business. “Where
are we going to get people to play
character bits?” he asks rhetori
cally. “Where are we going to
get girls who are plain looking
like lots of girls really are?”
The director admits that the
magnetism of the films would
lure the cream of the world’s
beauty crop to Hollywood, and he
also admits that it’s great to
have a lot of beauty around town.
“But it’s painful to see all these
girls pouring into Hollywood,
when nine-tenths or more of them
will be disappointed in a film
career. This thing is also de
priving the rest of the country of
a lot of beauty that would be
more appreciated at home than
in Hollywood!”
New Way To Fight Hate Mongers
Do you know how to squelch a bigot? What would you do if you
heard a voice, tinged with contempt, saying, “You’re not going to
ask the Millers to your party. They’re Jewish!” “Because few people
know how to counter such hateful talk, the bigot usually gets away
with it,” according to Harold P. Levy and Richard L. Williams, who
reveal a new technique in fighting hate-mongers, in the July issue
of Pageant magazine. ““
The authors describe how the
Commission on Community Inter
relations worked out a new way
to fight slurs on minority groups
in America. The CCI, its work and
its staff inter-racial and inter
religious, is a hard fighting, up
to-date outfit, which goes out into
the field to fight and is not satis
fied with scholarly reports and
analyses of how to fight anti
minority slurs.
When a bigot blames Jews for
a sugar shortage, or Italians for
pushing or Negroes for looking
for white-colar jobs, what would
you do to counteract such un-
American attitudes ? The CCI

Congress, uses the tools of modern
psychology. The authors say: “The
hate-monger is elusive; catching
him in the act would take an army
of investigators and a mint of
money.” So the CCI, working from
a file of actual ugly events, pro
duced brief dramas of such hatred
before an audience of average cit
