EtJ JEWS IN I
jf, SPORTS
ZZZZj By Haskell Cohen, JTA
City College basketball players
w ho are married do not play as
good ball as they did before they
wed, according to a survey made
of last year’s squad. Team co
captain Paul Schmones averaged a
little over seven points a game in
the three contests before marriage
but fell to fiye and a fraction
points a game in the next fifteen.
Regular Hilty Shapiro and sub
Milt Breenberg joined Schmones
in the ranks of benedicts at mid
season. Shapiro did better than
seven points per game for the first
eleven contests but dropped to
under five points per contest for
the twelve games remaining after
the chupah. Breenberg doubled
his total after marriage, scoring
once before, twice after. Ike Du
bow married before the season be
gan; he scored once, on a foul shot.
Evidently basketball is a game
for single men.

A few days after Hank Green
berg voluntarily benched himself
the big boy went back into the
Pirate lineup and started murder
ing the ball. In one double-header
against the Giants he laced out
three home runs, the last one re
sulting in a tie game after the
New Yorkers seemingly had it
clinched. His sudden spurt is
reminiscent of last year when the
last two months of the season he
shot to the home run lead in the
American League. There is little
likelihood, however, that he will
pass three or four National Leag
uers to gain the senior loop title.

New Yorkers are talking about
the fine job done on the Cancer
Memorial Card at Ebbets Field,
Brooklyn, which featured Mauri
ello and Lesnevich. Publicists Abe
Yager, Marty Berg and Irving
Rudd gave their time freely and
put in three weeks of concentrated
effort in making the show a huge
success. Something like $30,000
was realized for the fund.

Harry Mendel, the fight publi
cist, better known as the six day
bike promoter, is girding his loins
for the return of the bike mara
thon. He confided to us recently
that he is currently completing
arrangements to run a six day
bike race in New York City this
winter. The thriller will be held
in a large armory convinently lo
cated in the center of Manhattan.
Harry tells us that Jerry Rodman,
the foremost Jewish rider, will
probably be among the entrants.
Rodman is doing quite well in
Chicago as a cloak and suiter.

Jewish Agency in U.S.
Sends Message of
Sympathy to Detained
Palestine Leaders
NEW YORK (JTA)—A mes
sage of sympathy for Jewish lead
ers detained without charges by
the British authorities in Pales
tine was cabled by the American
section of the Jewish Agency to
the Jewish National Council in
Jerusalem.
“This arbitrary and unwarrant
ed action on the part of the Brit
ish Palestine authorities seems
calculated only to intensify bitter
ness and resentment and consti
tutes a new manifestation of Brit
ain’s lawless regime in Palestine,”
the message read.

Arrest German Woman
Who Denounced Jews
To Gestapo
FRANKFURT (JTA)—A Ger
man woman, Anni Ettle, who de
nounced many Jews to the Gestapo
in order to confiscate their art
collections, has been arrested and
will be tried by a German de
nazification court, it was reported
here. She will probably also be
tried by a war crimes court for
contributing toward the murder
of the Jewish collectors.
The woman and her
obtained a confession from the
Gestapo to confiscate paintings,
sculpture and other works of art
owned by Frankfurt Jews, and as
early as 1933 drew up a list of the
collections they wished to acquire.
It is estimated that the Ettles
amassed about $2,000,000 of art
pieces. In addition some 300
paintings are known to be missing
from the collections confiscated by
them.
Originally the husband received
a seven-year sentence and the wife
five years for concealment of
assets. When investigators check
ed her “private” collection, they
found that many paintings were
stolen and hidden in out of the
way caches. In an attempt to
avoid prosecution she bribed sev
eral members of a military gov
ernment staff with paintings.

American Jewish community is
not sufficiently aware of what
went on on the other side, and
what was done by us on this side.
What is most important is that
her book is not a gloomy story of
tragic events; it packs enough
heroic incidents to furnish Holly
wood with plots for the next ten
years. Moreover, it contains a
message of hope, of resistance to
evil, of insistance on survival, ex
pressed in the upbuilding of the
homeland and the continuation of
our Jewish tradition of valor and
uncompromising identification with
the forces of light. It will be a
morale.-builder for young and old
among us. We hope that it will
also set the style for more pub
lications in the same field. For
this is the most important role of
a pioneer, be it among authors or
any other people.
Jewish Leaders Hail Gen.
Clay's Rebuke To
Germans Who Blame DP's
For Black Market
MUNIH (JTA)—Jewish author
ities this week applauded a state
ment made by Gen. Lucius D.
Clay, American commander in
Germany, rebuking a German min
ister for charging that the dis
placed Jews were responsible for
Germany’s black market.
“Such a thing makes no sense
at all,” Gen. Clay told a parley of
German ministers in the American
zone, meeting in Stuttgart. De
claring that "you know who is re
sponsible for the black market,”
he asserted that it was unfair of
the Germans to try to rid them
selves of the blame. Such state
ments by German officials lessen
the chances of tolerance and
understanding, he added.
The General’s remarks were ob
viously aimed at Bavarian Minis
ter of Economics Rudolph Zorn,
who several months ago made the
charge. Jewish leaders immedi
ately challenged Zorn, but this is
the first indication of official
American opinion on the charge.
A Weak Democracy A Threat to the Jews
(Continued from Page Three)
The latter is a particularly im
portant fact. Community rela
tions implies relationships between
whole communities. Because of
the techniques employed, too much
work in this field has become a
one-way traffic, relationships be
tween a group of professionals,
acting on behalf of the Jewish
community, and other communi
ties. Mass participation is vital
in order to help the Jewish com
munity regain its sense of self
respect and dignity and to convey
to it the feeling that it is part of
Rubanian Parliment
Asked To Hold Public
Trial of Murders
BUCHAREST (JTA)—The Ru
manian Parliament this week
heard a request by Jon Stoica, of
the Ploughmen’s Front Party,
that a public trial be held of the
murderers of 126 Jews who were
slaughtered in the village of
Sarmasi, in September, 1944.
Pointing out that although three
years have passed since the crime
was committed, Stoica said no
measures have been taken so far
to punish the perpetrators of the
crime. Gen. Dumitriu Damaeanu,
Under-Secretary of National De
fense, promised to initiate an in
vestigation.
The victims of the Sarmasi mas
sacre were exhumed and buried in
a common grave according to Jew
ish rites, in March, 1945.
