JWB Southern Section Meets in Savinnah
(Continued from Page One)
and the election of officers for the
next year. Representing more
than 40,000 members of 17 Jewish
Centers in nine Southern states,
the delegates heard nationally
known speakers present various
aspects of Jewish Center-commun
ity relationships.
The proposed statement of prin
ciples defines the functions of the
local Jewish Center as:
Service as an agency of Jewish
identification, Jewish integration
and personality development; as
sistance in the integration of the
individual Jew, as well as the
Jewish group, into the total Amer
ican community; furtherance of
the democratic way of life; and
providing a dynamic and flexible
program of service in the fields
of recreation and informal educa
tion for the entire Jewish com
munity.
At its Sunday night session, the
conference heard Dr. Horace Kal
len, professor at the New School
for Social Research in New York,
speak on “Setting our Sights for
Building a Jewish Life in Amer
ica.” Dr. Kallen took issue with
his title, asserting that the sights
had already been set by the first
seven propositions of the Declar
ation of Independence and their
modern counterparts, the Good
Neighbor Policy and the Four

Freedoms. The fight for Jewish
survival is inextricably bound up
with the fight for the survival of
democracy, he said, and without
democracy, Judaism cannot live.
Democracy he defined as “the
right to be different without being
penalized for being different.”
Difference is inherent in America,
he declared, and even as the
American language is a conglom
eration of different accents and
intonations on English, so Ameri
can culture Is a combining of the
culture of many peoples. In such
an atmosphere, he said, Jewish
culture has a rightful place.
Panel discussions included
“Youth’s Suggestions for Com
munity Participation” led by Mrs.
Louise Rudofsky, Savannah, mem
ber* of the National Youth Plan
ning Commission and the Savan
nah Jewish Educational Alliance’s

nooga Jewish Community Center,

Women in the Center”, with Miss
Miriam Ephriam, associate direc
tor of the JWB Program Depart
ment and consultant to the Nat
ional Committee on Girls’ and
Women’s Activities in the Center
leading the discussion.
Jules Paglfn, of New Orleans,
president of the JWB Southern
Section, in reporting on the activ
ities of the Section, stressed the
importance of activities and pro
grams keyed to the needs of the
young Jewish people in the South.
Informal education, constructive
recreation and opportunities to
absorb Jewish culture were cited
by him as primary necessities in
future programs of the Section.
Large Center budgets and im
pressive buildings were meaning
less, he stated, unless the Center
program provides the opportunity
for youth building and the Center
itself acts as a unifying force for
the whole Jewish community.
In the election of officers, Mr.
Paglin was named to continue in
office as president. Barney Me
dintz, co-chairman of the Atlanta
Jewish Educational Alliance, was

SZYK WILL ILLUMIN
ATE SCROLL FOR
WARSAW MEMORIAL
Arthur Szyk, internationally fa
mous artist, will illuminate the
scroll inscribed by Chief Rabbi
Isaac Herzog of Palestine, which
will be placed in the cornerstone
of the permanent Memorial to the
Jews who rose against the Nazis
in the Warsaw Ghetto Battle, and
the six million Jews martyred by
Hitler, when the site for the
Memorial is dedicated on Sunday,
October 19th, on Riverside Drive
between 83rd and 84th Streets,
New York City. The scroll has
already arrived in New York.
Prophesying the day when
"there will be enduring peace a
mong all mankind”, the scroll calls
for the “foul weed of hate” to be
uprooted from the earth. It prays
“for a time when a love for all
mankind will be instilled in the
hearts of all nations.”
Mayor William O’Dwyer, United
States Senator Irving M. Ives and
President Vincent Auriol, of
France, speaking from Paris by
radio—will address the gathering,
and the Ambassadors of a number
of foreign countries, as well as
Jewish and Christian religious
leaders, will participate in the
dedication ceremony, which is
scheduled to start at 12:30 P. M.
Jo Davidson is designing the
Memorial, which will be erected
on land donated by New York
City.
The dramatic portion of the
dedication ceremony will include
the world-famous cantor, Miihal
Kussevitsky, and a choir of 150
cantors of the Cantors Association
of the United States and Canada.
GOLDIE MIERSON CALLS FOR
MOBILIZATION OF
PALESTINE JEWS
JERUSALEM (JTA) Goldie
Meirson, head of the political de
partment of the Jerusalem section
of the Jewish Agency, called on
every Jewish man, woman and
child in Palestine to stand ready
for mobilization in the face of
“threats from all sides.”
Speaking to a conference of
Jewish war veterans in Tel Aviv,
Mrs. Mierson asserted that it was
most urgent at the present time
that Jews mobilize as they did
during World War 11. The Jew
ish community, which desires to
live in peace with its Arab neigh
bors, will know how to defend it
self, she said.
