Z. O. A. Will Produce Three?,Act Play, Dealing With
Jewish Defense in Palestine, on April 11th,
In Carnegie Hall
The Education Department of the Zionist Organization of Amer
ica has announced a new phase in Zionist activities with the disclos
ure that a three-act play, “Sword By His Side,” written by the Pal
estine playwright, Max Zweig, will be presented on Sunday evening,
April 11th, at Carnegie Hall.
The title of the play is taken
from the Biblical quotation: “They
that builded the wall, every one
with one of his hands wrought in
the work, and with the other held
his weapon; and the builders, every
one had his sword girded by his
side.” The play is symbolical of
the Jewish resistance irr Palestine
today against the invading brig
ands and gangsters financed by
the Mufti and other Arab gang
ster leaders.
Briefly, the play deals with the
heroic defense of Jewish settlers
in an isolated spot in northern
Palestine, how that settlement is
virtually wiped out almost to the
last man, but in their defense of
that settlement another settlement
is able to survive.
The play is being directed and
staged by Hannah Goodman. In
active cooperation with Miss Good
man are Carl Alpert, director of
the Department of Education of
the ZOA, and Manuel Posy, nat
ional director of the American
Zionist Fund.
The play opens with the report
ed rumors of an impending Arab
attack. The settlers, disarmed by
the British, are determined, with
the few weapons they have, to de
fend their newly created life of

YALE PREXY SCORED FOR
OPPOSING ANTI-BIAS
LEGISLATION
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (JPS)—
Vincent J. McGovern, president of
the New Haven Central Labor
Council, made public a letter last
week assailing President Charles
Seymour of Yale University for
his opposition to proposed state
legislation prohibiting racial and
religious discrimination by colleges
in the admission of students.
The letter was concerned with
remarks attributed to Dr. Sey
mour on the occasion of the recent
annual observance of alumni day
at Yale. “You argue that anti
discrimination legislation would
constitute ‘interference’ in college
affairs,” Mr. McGovern wrote.
“Even if this were true, it would
not follow that Americans of dif
ferent racial, religious or national
origins should be ed
ucational opportunity in order to
spare colleges such petty annoy
ances. But it is not true.” He
termed it significant that the Yale
president did not deny that dis
crimination was being widely prac
ticed in institutions of higher
learning.

Reports that the Rumanian Government had moved to tighten
controls on its borders to prevent emigration attempts have brought
a sharp increase of activity in the Bucharest Office of the Hebrew
Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) as would-be-emi
grants sought migration advice. Hungarian police have been or
dered to return all Rumanian Jews who have crossed the border.
The refugees, fleeing principally from confiscatory decrees, were
reported headed for the American sector of Austria.
