Status for Captives
lERUSALEM, (JTA) Urging Jewish and Arab fighting forces in
Palestine to treat captured enemies as “prisoners of war” the Inter

Jacques Reynier, Red Cross of
ficial in charge of the Palestine
operation, told newsmen that the
•elief organization had asked the
Palestine Government, the Jews
uid the Arabs to adhere to the
Geneva Convention on rules of
warfare. He said the Red Cross
had also advanced the following
•equests:
1 "Neutral zones” be estab

sick and wounded, and women and
:hildren, might find refuge and
•eceive medical aid and food until
the fighting subsides.
2. Hospitals and other medical
centers be "immunized” and not
used as bases for attacks so that
they do not become targets for

3. Funds for the Red Cross pro

same principle would be applied
for the Arabs.
The Red Cross representative
revealed that the organization lmd
a fund of $240,000 for administra
tive expenses, but would use some
of the money for relief purposes
if there is a surplus.
He disclosed that the Red Cross
had appealed to all parties in the
country to adhere to the organiza
tion’s humanitarian principles.
These, he said, include: 1. Pro
tection for the sick and wounded
and their transportation to safety;
and, 2. Respect for the remains
of the dead and for funerals.
The message also asked guar
antees of safety for non-combat
tants, especially women and child
ren. Both the Jews and the Arabs,
Reynier asserted, have promised to
adhere to the Red Cross requests
and have also pledged funds for
the organization’s program.
French Foreign Office
Confirms Arms Sale to
Lebanon
PARIS (JTA) —A Foreign Office
spokesman here this week con
firmed that the French Govern
ment has permitted a French arm
aments firm to sell and deliver a
quantity of arms to Lebanon, but
added that the total value of the
shipments to date is only $87,000.
Earlier, an arms company ad
mitted to J. T. A. that it had re
ceived orders for $20,000,000 worth
of mortars, artillery and machine
guns from Lebanon. A govern
ment official explained that the
sale was in “fulfillment” of a year
old Franco-Lebanese pact.

evasion to corruption.

1,000 Volunteers for
Palestine Service
NEW YORK (JTA) —More than
1,000 persons, mostly World War
II veterans, have volunteered for
service in the “George Washington
Legion” to fight in Palesetine. the
American League for a Free Pal
estine, which is organizing the re
cruitment campaign in this coun
try, announced. The State De
partment stated later that pass
ports would not be issued to Amer
icans desiring to fight in Pales
tine.
Major Samuel Weiser, of Eng-,
land, founder of the Hebrew Le
gion in his own country, is now
in the U. S. to help organize a
force of 10,000 volunteers to aid
the Jews in Palestine, a League
statement said. Weiser told a
press conference here he hoped to
have a militia of 20,000 men ready
to enter Palestine in May. Re
cruitment campaigns, he disclosed,
are now being conducted in Eng
land, France and South America,
as well as in the U. S.
Herbert M. C. Walker, a veteran
pilot said the League has “P-51s,
P-38s and P-63s—we already have
enough pilots for those planes on
hand, but we’d like to hear from
all pilots who’d care to volunteer —
just to keep them handy.” Major
Weiser and Barney Ross are plan
ning to visit Boston, Philadelphia,
Detroit, Chicago and Los Angeles
to spur enlistments.
