THE JEWISH QUIZ BOX BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX < Copyright, 1948, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) QUESTION: What Is a “Shochet” ? ANSWER: A “Shochet" is the name commonly given to one who is licensed to kill animals or fowl according to Jewish ritual. QUESTION: What is the origin of this term? ANSWER: The term “shechita," the act of kosher slaughtering, is an old Biblical term. The slaugh tering, which is done with a sharp instrument, is denoted with a word which stems from a Semitic root indicating sharpness. By trans posing the letters, one might ar rive at the root “shotach” which means to expose. This might im ply that ritual slaughtering is an act of exposing the animal’s throat. QUESTION: Why is it that a “Shochet” is always a man? ANSWER: Those who are quick to criticize that the Jewish religion regards women as in ferior beings find no difficulty in answering this question to their satisfaction in saying that women weren’t ‘‘good enough” in the eyes of the law. Those with more pa tience note that the Code of Jew ish Law makes it very clear that Welcome Always! . The volume contains the biographies of twelve great Jewish scholars from the Middle Ages to the present time, which more than formal history gives a view of Jewish cultural devel opment through the ages. The biographies include those of the giants of Jewish Mediaeval Cul ture, Rab Saadio Gaeon. Rabbanu Gershom, Rashi and the great Maimonides. The book is by Dr. Alexander Marx. Professor of Jewish History at the Jewish The ological Seminary, and is not only scholarly, but also simply and well written and is not obscured by too many Hebraisms which mar the works of most Rabbis and peeve their secular readers. It is a fine book of Jewish history told through the illustrious lives of great Jewish personalities. Do you LIKE FRIED CHICKEN? Good!!
