THE JEWISH
QUIZ BOX
BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
(Copyright, 1948, Jewish
Telegraphic Agency, Inc.)
QUESTION: What is the Jew
ish attitude toward dreams?
ANSWER: It is difficult to es
tablish a clear-out approach to
wards the subject of dreams on
the part of official Jewish opin
ion. It is interesting to note how
ever, that from our earliest his
tory, dreams have played an im
portant part in the culture. The
first Jew, Abraham, realized the
covenant between the Almighty
and his heirs in the course of a
"deep sleep.” Jacob saw the vis
ion of the future in a drehm where
he saw angels going up and down
the ladder. Joseph not only was
a dreamer, but became an inter
preter of dreams as in the case of
Pharoah and his servants.
The Malbim (Commentary on
ihc Bible) in his comments on
Joel 3:1 distinguishes between a
dream, a vision and a prophecy,
claiming that a dream is like

much chaff with little grain, a
vision mostly or all grain and a
prophecy like refined grain. Also
to be noted is the Talmudic claim
that the outcome of all dreams de
pends upon their interpretation,
and that a dream which remains
uninterpreted is like a letter tnat
remains unread. Folklore insists
that dreams are evidence of the
contrary. What seems to be a
common denominator in most
Jewish comments on the subject
is the fact that one man’s dreams
should be openly expressed.
Bevin Refuses To
Comment On Israel
LONDON—(JTA) After being
exhorted by several Members of
Parliament this week to extend
recognition to the state of Israel,
Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin
told Commons that he “had noth
ing to add” to his statement in
the House on June 9 in which he
said that the British Government
does not recognize any persons in
Palestine as a de jure govern
ment. During the debate, Barn
ett Janner, Labor, pointed to the
United Nations’ recognition of the
Provisional Government of Is
rael as a precedent for Britain to
follow.
S. Segal, another Laborite, term
ed Israel the “most progressive
country in the entire Middle East”
and urged that the British Gov
ernment “assist the Arab states
to face reality by granting de
facto recognition to Israel.” In
reply to a question on whether
“recognizing Israel would not fa
cilitate the position of the oil
refineries” in Haifa, Bevin declar
ed that recognizing the Jewish
state would not bring more oil
out of Iraq.
