QUESTION: What is the origin
of the name "Tzipporah?" (Sub
mitted by T. D„ Boston, Mass.)
ANSWER: “Tzipporah” is a
Biblical name. It is found in the
Bible as the name of the wife of
Moses (Exodus 2:21) who was the
daughter of Jethro, the Midianite
Priest. It is generally taken to
mean “a bird” because it comes
from the Hebrew word “Tzipor”
.which means a bird and stems
from a Hebrew root meaning “to
chirp” (like a bird) or “to flee”
(to fly like a bird). '

QUESTION: What is the mean
ing of the name "Joseph?"
ANSWER: The name “Joseph”
is a Biblical name whose origin
is explained in the Bible itself
where we find Rachel, the moth
er of the famous Joseph of Bibli
cal fame naming him so, “to say
(that) G-d will give me another
son.” (Genesis 30:24). The word
•‘Joseph” therefore means “he
will add.” It should be noted, of
i*
course, that Joseph was one of
the twelve sons of father Jacob
in the Bible.

QUESTION: What is the mean
ing and derivation of the name
"Judah?"
ANSWER: “Judah” is also a
Biblical name with its meaning
clearly explained in the Bible.
Judah was one of the twelve sons
of Jacob who came from the
mother Leah. The Bible writes:
“And she conceived again and
bore a son and she said ‘This time
will I praise the Lord.’ Therefore
she called his son “Judah” . . .”
(Genesis 29:35). The name Judah
therefore comes from the Hebrew
root meaning to “praise.”

QUESTION: What is the mean
ing and derivation of the name
"John?"
ANSWER It' is generally be
lieved that “John” is a short form
or contraction of the Hebrew
name “Jochanan” which means
“G-d is gracious” or “God is
merciful.” “Yo” means “G-d”
and “Chonon” means “is graci
ous.” . Sometimes we find the
second half of the name used
alone as a short form. Thus the
name “Chonom” means “gracious”
as it is used as a Hebrew name.

QUESTION: Why do Jews gen
erally refrain from using the
word "John?"
ANSWER: There seems to be
two theories on the subect. Eith
er it was originally a self
inflicted abstinence because of its
association with the Christian
John the Baptist, or it may pos
sibly be that the early Christians
prohibited the Jews from using
the name that had once been
assigned to a great Christian.
History finds many occasions
where names have either been
forced upon or denied.to Jews.
