Mnsings .... By Ethel "Teddy" Moscovitz Remember! the Ladies Aid Card Party at River Gardens will take place Tuesday afternoon . . . * * * * Miriam Carter publicity chair man of the Business and Profes sional Women of Hadassah wrote that the B. & P. are sponsoring a Bingo and Card Party at the Hotel Floridan Sunday January 16th . y . There is to be no admis sion charge for those attending. It is suggested that people desir ing to play cards or Mah Jong bring their own cards and sets . . . The chairmen for the occasion are Mrs. J. Margolin and Miss Lottie Salsman . . . They have arranged very interesting prizes for the bingo tables . . . All those inter ested are cordially invited to at tend ... Mrs. Bilew of the Floridan Hotel will be hostess . . . * * * * I was one of the seventy women Tuesday afternoon who attended the B’nai B’rith Women’s Lunch eon at the George Washington Hotel in honor of Mrs. Maurice Bisgyer, wife of the B. B. execu tive director . . . The Bisgyers have recently returned from Europe and Israel and Mrs. Bisgyer’s talk was most interesting and inform ative . . . But was this really a Ben Brith meeting I was attending? . . . I remember the fifth district convention held seven years ago ... I remember the State dinner at the conclusion of the week-end meeting here last spring . . . Then it was help to the needy and good will to all, and once in awhile a i speaker would forget himself and mention Palestine . . . But Tuesday afternoon it was ISRAEL . . . Well, at last we now have de jure recognition from B’nai B’rith and if B. B. thinks that’s the American thing to do then the United States government certain ly can rest assured that it is a patriotic step to take . . . A great many other things can be said with tongue in cheek . . . but this much I know to be true ... in the south especially . . . the leadership of Ben Brith . . . the leadership that has done the doing and not the talking . . . has been the Zionist leadership ... A great many ills came of this sort of thing . . . but one thing I believe did come of the splitting of time McMullen Machine Shop EQUIPPED FOR ALL MECHANICAL SERVICES Machining - Brazing - Fabrication Gear Cutting - Welding - Forging Installations - Repairs Phones: 6-1795 Night 5-8896-J 100 South Main Street Jacksonville, Fla. With a powerful Zionist leadership headed nationally by the late Henry Mon sky Ben Brith was kept ou£ of such movements as was started by the American Council for Judaism, which having had the support of another Jewish group might have done considerable harm . . . No one will ever be able to judge what would have happened had B’nai B’rith progressed under a leadership other than Henry Monsky’s and other Zionists who took executive posts in the lodges . . . (Perhaps it never would have grown) Yet viewing the picture in retrospect when American Jewry desperately wanted B’nai Brith’s open support on the re building of Eretz Israel and it was not forthcoming, who can say what would have happened at that time if all good Zionists had walk ed out and left the organization to swing right into the arms of the A. J. C. . . . Let no one make a mistake that the B’nai B’rith Men or Women is a Zionist organization . . . While for the first time a national speak er felt that she could let go on the topic of Israel B. B. is still a fraternal and philanthropic organ ization and on the defensive against anti-semitism . . . Mrs. Bisgyer gave a clear pic ture of the work of her organiza tion . . . and spoke shortly of the condition -of the Jews inside Eu rope . . . She brought out the fact that anti-semitism is still virile In Germany . . . “The rubble of war still littering the streets of Frank fort was like the rubble that still r&nained in the hearts of the German people . . . Our one great concern is that the G. I. stationed there will not return to the United States indoctrinated with German anti-semitism” ... Os the situation in democratic Switzerland she said, “Even in Switzerland where the Jews are economically secure there are many who speak of migrating to Israel.” . . . She said that she hoped that European B’nai B’rith which still has a selective membership will soon cast aside such restriction and become democratized ... In Israel, she said, there are several B’nai B’rith lodges which support a school for subnormal children, a project which had been approved by Henrietta Szold . . . Presiding over the luncheon was Mrs. Morris Witten, president of the local chapter of B’nai B’rith Women . . . She cordially invited everyone to attend the open meet ing next Wednesday night in the Temple vestry at which time she will give her report of the three day B’nai B’rith convention re cently held in Tampa . . .
