ANSWER: In the days when jews were prohibited by despots from having circumcisions per formed upon their children, they risked their lives to perform the rite in secret. During the cere mony, candles were placed in the window to indicate to neighbors arid the Jewish passers-by that a circumcision was being solemnized and that “the light of Israel” did not fail. * * * * QUESTION: Why is it custom ary to put a few drops of wine on the lips of the infant after the circumcision ? ANSWER: It is at this time that he “enters the covenant” of his people and thus is given hrs Jewish name. The first child born of a Jew in the Bible is given his name while being circumcised. Thus Isaac s name and his circum cision are contained in two verses which follow each other in the Bible (Genesis 21:3,4). Abraham’s name and Sarah’s name were changed when Abraham was given i the commandment of circum cision. American Engineers To Survey Needs Os Haifa Port HAIFA . (JTA) —An American engineering firm has been com missioned by the Israeli Com munications Ministry to under take a survey of Haifa port with a view towards its long-range development, it was learned here this week. The same American firm is blueprinting plans for tne building of a deep-water harbor at Tel Aviv. The “El-Al” airline is in the process of purchasing several four-engine planes for regular service between Israel and Eu rope. it was learned here. The air company is attempting to free the Jewish state of its depend ence on foreign affairs. Mean while, regular bi-weekly plane service between Israel and Bel gium will begin next week. Jewish Agency Considers Erecting $1,000,000 Building JERUSALEM, (JTA) The question of erecting a special building to house sessions of the World Zionist Congress was rais ed here this week at a meeting of the Jewish Agency executive. The proposed edifice would cost $1,000,000 to construct. Dr. Herzl’s grave would be perman ently established at its entrance. The session also took up the question of increased coloniza tion programs and the movement of newly arriving immigrants to rural areas. Keren Hayesod, which is a constituent of the United Jewish Appeal, is the financial instru ment of the Jewish Agency. Rabbi's Anthology On Immortality Reaches U. S. A one-volume anthology bear ing the title “The Jewish Con ception of Immortality and the Life Hereafter,” compiled by 73- year-old Rabbi John Ross of Bel fast, Ireland, has been received here for distribution in America, it was announced yesterday by 11. J. Ross, a New York stockbroker, who is a son of the Rabbi. Rabbi Ross has been minister and president of the Belfast He brew Congregation. The compil ation is the first on this special ized subject to appear between covers. A detailed exposition of the traditional Jewish outlook on the doctrine of immortality, Rabbi Ross’ book runs to 378 pages and is divided into three parts: Bib lical, traditional and philosophi cal testimony. The volume cites the doctrine on immortality as taught in various periods during the past five thousand years, pre senting a comprehensive panor ama running from the Biblical era to the present. Compiled by Rabbi Ross in res ponse to the “expressed desire” of many Jews" to be enlightened on this all-important subject,” quoting sources which range from Holy Scriptures to contemporary religious philosophy. “Judaism teaches that we come from God and return to God, after passing through the world with God,” Rabbi Ross states in his preface. “Man has a soul and the purpose of its coming into this world is to earn its reward by observing God’s command ments and thus achieve eternal life and bliss.” Rabbi Ross’ book is also an answer to “many devout and earnest Christian student who ac tually is of the impression that Jews do not believe in the here after.” Every citation in Rabbi Ross’ anthology is either from the Holy Bible, from the rabbis of the talmudic era, or from the group o.f'jfccholars and philosoph ers whose authority was accept ed by the Jewish people. Dr. Perlmann, who studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and earned his doctorate at the University of London, has been on the faculty of Brooklyn College and the New School for Social Research. Professor Samuel, founder of the Middle East College of Public Administration in Jerusalem, was for almost thirty years a government official in Palestine. Dr. Patai, who earned the first Ph.D. to he awarded by the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, has just completed • year in the United States on a Viking Fund Research Fellowship.- He has taught at Columbia University and will also teach this year at the University of Pennsylvania and the New School for Social Research in New York. Israeli Minister To Moscow Reports 500,000 Jews Now Reside In Soviet Capital ROME, (JTA) Mrs. Golda Meirson, Israeli Minister to the Soviet Union, declared here this week that there are 500,000 Jews living in Moscow at present. The Israeli diplomat, enroute from Tel Aviv to Prague, held a closed meeting here with Israeli offic ials concerned with the problem of DP immigration to the Jewish state. Mrs. Meirson also brought the Israeli emissaries here up to date on the current military, political, economic and immigration situa tion in Israel. The delay in Is rael’s acceptance of the latest U. N. Security Council cease-fire and withdrawal order in the Ne gev, she told correspondents, does not mean that the U. N.’s efforts to bring peace to Palestine have failed.
