Understanding Os
Minority Problems
NEW YORK, (JTA) —Consid-
erable material essential to an
understanding of minority prob
lems in the United States i 3
lacking in textbooks used in ele
mentary and secondary schools
in this country, Dr. Howard E.
Wilson, of the Carnegie Endow
ment for International Peace, re
ported here this week. Dr. Wil
son’s observations were based on
a four-year study of school occ K3
undertaken by the American
Council on Education at tr.e re
quest of the National Conference
of Christians and Jews.
Many school books, he declar
ed, treat the subject of immi
grants in “patronizing terms."
while most textual material cn
Jews deals chiefly with ancient I
Jews. He added that most tear
book “sins were those of emis
sion. rather than commission.
The study covered 267 elemen
tary and secondary texts. 130
children's library books anc A*
college-level books.
