Two Israel-bound refugees from Shanghai, Mr. and Mrs. J*an
Methner, witnessed the marriage of their son Harry, a resident of
Rochester, N. Y., in a dramatic and unprecedented ceremony at fcllis
Island while the parents awaited a ship to take them on the last leg of
their journey. ..... , . , .
The voyagers, only briefly reunited with their son, who arrived in
the United States two years ago under the auspices of United Service
for New Americans, stood under an improvised “chupah” as he was
married to Ruth Heuman, a newcomer he met here.
TRIPLE THREAT STORK WINS RACE
AGAINST U.S. VISAS FOR HIAS DPs
It was a race—stork versus U. S. visas—ln the same of waiting played by
Mr and Mrs. Warszawsky in the Feldaflng DP camp of Germany, and the
harbinger of blessed events broke the tape first As Max Newman, Director
in the DP areas of Europe for HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society), ex
olained. the Warszawskys were ready to immigrate to the U. S. and were
waiting for their visas when the stork let it be known to them that he
would soon be hovering over the Bavarian DP camp with a bundle of joy.
«ii. e HIAS Director delayed the Warszawsky’s immigration—and Mr. Stork
this month deposited three more little Warszawskys right in the middle of
their visas. Now the Warszawskys, with their two sons and a daughter, are
acain waiting till the medicos permit them to make the overseas journey
to America, where they will live with Mrs. Warszawsky’s brother Sam
Solomon, a grocer in Washington, D. C. w

THE SOUTHERN JEWISH WEEKLY
The ZOA Plans
(Continued from Page One)
sponsibilities before its mission
was fully accomplished.
“Today there are many who
would like to take over,” Dr.
Neumann said. “Many who are
pushing to the front, willing to
thrust the Zionist movement
aside and consign it to oblivion.
To them we say ‘Not so fast, good
friends’. It is well to bear in
mind that the State of Israel is
the product of a half century of
unremitting toil and struggle and
organized Zionist effort. Israel
is the child of the Zionist move
ment, born of its travail. The
welfare of the infant child will
continue to be a Zionist responsi
bility. The time has not yet
come for demobilization and re
laxation. The very opposite is
true. If there were no Zionist
movement in existence, this
would be the time to create it.”
This is the immediate program
of the ZOA. Specifically, we
learn from reliable sources near
to the executive, that a concerted
effort will be made to strengthen
the economic institutions of the
ZOA particularly the Israel Eco
nomic Corporation and private
investments in Israel under the
auspices of the ZOA. The slogan
of the campaign will be non
interference in the internal affairs
of the American Zionists by any
outside power, even if it comes
from Tel Aviv, and a re-assertion
of the independence of American
Zionism. Dr. Silver has evidently
eliminated himself from the con
didacy for the next Presidency of
the ZOA and the chances of the
much more conservative Mr.
Daniel S. Frisch seem to be soar
ing.
