Jacksonville, Florida All Jewry Hail U. N. Acceptance of Israel Jews all over the world will count the day on which the historic event of Israel's admission to the United Nations took place as the most im portant in Jewish history, next to the Proclamation of the Jewish State. This approval after one year's embryonic development cli maxes Israel's brilliant military and political success. Last Friday night the three local Jewish congregations, orthodox, conservative and reform, joined to gether in a special service to give thanks. Thousands of similar celebrations took place throughout the world. As a member of the United Nations, the State of Israel can now take its full and rightful place in the community of nations, which is striving to build a just and permanent peace for all peoples throughout the universe. We look to Israel as a stabilizing force for political amity and harmony and as a source of economic prosperity throughout the Middle East. No state in the world has a greater interest than Israel in the establishment of enduring peace, and no people has a lengthier tradition of justice than the Jewish people with its heritage of prophetic teachings. Through the act of admission, the United Nations has carried to logical conclusion its own recommendations and decisions, and has thus further strengthened the status and prestige of the world organization. We, the publishers of The Southern Jewish Weekly, who have consistently fought for the Jewish state despite difficul ties with anti-Zionists in this area, hail with deep joy and grat ification the 59th member of the U. N. We salute the people and government of Israel, who with such distinguished states manship, courage and dedication have brought Israel to equality among the nations of the world. BY BORIS SMOLAR (Copyright, 1949, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) U. Nf ECHOES The talk you hear now about Israel among diplomats in the lobby of the United Nations headquarters is quite differ ent from what was heard prior to Israel’s admission to the U. N. . . . There is, for instance, talk of the possibility that the Israeli delegation at the U. N. may soon include an Arab citizen of the Jewish state . . . And there is much talk about Bernard Baruch’s intention to visit Israel this summer . . . Also, a lot is being heard about a wish expressed by Vice President Alben W. Barkley to go to Israel “in his later years” . . . The Vice President hopes “to sit in the shade” of a forest planted in his name by the Jewish National Fund... Aubrey Eban’s popularity in the ranks of the United Nations now exceeds that of any of the older U. N. delegates . . . The Arab delegations at the U. N. are anticipating a change of leadership in their ranks . . . Emir Adil Arslan, a leading Syrian nationalist, is expected to leave Syria shortly for Lake Success ... He will take the place of Faris el-Khoury, present head of the Syrian delegation, who was the leading “brain truster” of all Arab groups at the U. N.
