Rabbi Irwin Gordon of Yeshiva

principle address.
The main sessions on Sunday
heard addresses by Rabbi Gilbert
Klaperman of Charleston, S. C.,
and Rabbi A. I. Rosenberg of Sa
vannah, Ga., who spoke on “A
Practical Program for the Syna
gogue”, outlining in detail the
importance of the Synagogue
strengthening itself internally
through bringing its membership
into contact with Jewish values,
teachings and practices, making
the Brotherhoods, Sisterhoods
and Youth Groups instruments
for Jewish Education rather than
permitting them to exist simply
as social groups. Rabbi Klap-

erman stressed the importance
of the Orthodox Synagogue mak
ing its weight and influence felt
in the community. “In most
communities”, said Rabbi Klap-r
erman, “those affiliated with Or
thodox Congregations are .the
overwhelming majority. Yet
welfare funds, Jewish Centers
and other Community institutions
persist in ignoring tradition and
properly supporting institutions
for Torah. This may be traced
mainly to the passiveness of the
Orthodox Jew. If we are to
accomplish our task we must be
come aggressive and demand that
our point of view because it is
the traditional point of view
be recognized.”
The Mid-conference Banquet
featured an address by Rabbi
liershel Schacter of New York
who spoke on “A Dynamic Or
thodoxy.” Said Rabbi Schacter,
“The Jews of Europe died in
vain and our efforts for Israel
are half-hearted if we do not
build a firm structure of Jewish
Life in America. Only Ortho
doxy can secure the survival of
Jewish life on these shores, for
only Orthodox Judaism has been
and can be successful in repro
ducing itself.”
