QUESTION: Why is it custom
to conduct morning and
evening services in the home of
a mourner during the seven-day
mourning period
ANSWER: Some commentators
feel this is done because mourn
ers are confined to their homes
and are unable to go to the Syn
agogue to pray during this per
iod. However, the Talmud clear
ly states that even when there
are no mourners it was necessary
to assemble the required quorum
(10 males) at the home of the
deceased, giving as a reason the
fact that the soul of the deceased
is gratified by the honor extend
ed to its memory by conducting
prayers at the home.

gation, "May the Almighty con
sole you along with the mourners
of Zion and Jerusalem?"
ANSWER: In the first place,
mourners are not allowed in the
Synagogue during the singing of
hymns and praises of delight
which welcome the entrance of
the “Sabbath Queen.” There
fore, they enter after the songs
have been completed and Sab
bath has officially been ushered
in.
In addition, this tradition dates
to the days of Solomon when
two special entrances were con
structed in the Holy Temple.
One was called the “Gate of the
Bridegrooms,” through which
prospective grooms entered the
Temple and were greeted by
well-wishers. The other was
called the “Gate of the Mourn
ers,” through which mourners
passed on their way to the Tem
ple and were greeted by the con
dolences of those who stood by
for that purpose.
There being no Temple in Je
rusalem today, the Synagogue
takes its place and bridegrooms
are welcomed there on Sabbath
morning and mourners on Friday
evening in the aforementioned
manner.
