ZOA Convention

With an expected attendance of 2.000 delegates and alternates
representing close to 800 ZOA Districts in 48 States, the 52nd Annual
Convention of the Zionist Organisation of America, which will be
held in New York beginning May 27th-30th at the Hotel Statler, will
devote a major part of its proceedings to discussion and action on
the future program of the ZOA.
According to a tentative pro
gram made public by Jacques
Torczyner, Chairman of the Con
vention Committee, the political
situation in relation to Israel as
well as the World Zionist scene
will be reviewed by Dr. Abba
Hillel Silver at the political ses
sion on Sunday afternoon, May
29th, which will be held at the
Manhattan Center.
Among the guest speakers who
will address the Convention ses
sions will be Eliahu Elath, Is
raeli Ambassador to the United
States and Aubrey Eban, Israeli
representative to the United Na
tions.
A special session will be set
aside for a discussion of the re
port drafted by a special com
mittee headed by Federal Judge
Simon H. Rifkind of New York,
containing proposals for the fu
ture program and constitution
of the World Zionist Organiza
tion, including a blueprint' of the
relationship of Zionism to the
world Jewish community as a
whole and to the Government
and people of Israel. It is ex
pected that the explorations and
recommendations of this report
will be on a two-fold basis: Zion
ism as a means of helping the
people of Israel and Zionism as
a constructive force in Jewish
life outside of Israel. The report
will clarify the future trend and
direction of the Zionist move
ment.

urday night, May 28th, at Car
negie Hall at which Dr. Emanuel
Neumann will deliver his presi
dential address. Dr. Neumann
will be tendered a tribute at the I
closing session of the convention
which will be given in the form
of a dinner to him at the Hotel
Statler with Dr. Silver the prin
cipal speaker.
Preceding the formal conven
tion opening, a youth function
will be held on Friday night de
voted to a cultural discussion of
youth problems under the spon
sorship of the American Zionist
Youth Commission. Saturday
afternoon will be marked by the
holding of an Oneg Shabat under
the auspices of the Histadrut Iv
rit.
It is tentatively planned to
hold the elections of new officers
on Sunday.
It is further announced that the
tentative program envisages a
minimum of set speeches and the
elimination of luncheons so as to
afford delegates the maximum
time for discussion of all prob
lems confronting the convention.
Miamians Win
Speech Honors
Two Greater Miamians are
back at the University of Flori
da after winning debating hon
ors at three tournaments.
They are Jordan Bittel of Mi
ami Beach.and Walter Apfelbaum
of Miami, both members of Pi
Lambda Phi fraternity, who
.walked off with first place and
finalist in extemporaneous speak
ing at Waco, Tex., and went on
to win first place in debating at
the Georgetown Invitational in
Washington.
The tour concluded at the
Grand National Tourney at
Fredericksburg, Va., where Bit
tel took first place in after-dinner
speaking and interpretive read
ing and Apfelbaum landed in the
top ten for public discussion.
Bittel was recently initiated
into Phi Beta Kappa, honorary
scholastic fraternity, and Florida
Blue Key.
Other Miamians to make Blue
Key are Melvin Frumkes, Jerry
T. Simmons, Ted Wittner and
Sanford Freed.
