believe the same congregation
three years ago did not have
more than five intermarriages.
The Reform congregation in this
town probably has even a larger
percentage of intermarriage.”
"Where." I asked, "have you
found the percentage of inter
marriages the highest?
“That’s hard to tell by my kind
of Gallup poll. In a place like
New York, where of course you
often hear of intermarriage, you
still cannot judge easily, for the
thing is lost in the shuffle, so to
speak. The population is too
large. It is when you go to the
smaller towns that you begin to
become conscious of it. My im
pression is that the percentage is
highest in the south and west.”
"To what," I asked, "do you
attribute this sudden spurt in in
termarriage which you refer to?"
“Well,” he said, “there is a
lessening of tension between
Jews and non-Jews. They under
stand each other better, it seems.

stand that it might work out that
way. Theodor Herzl predicted
that establishment of a Jewish
state would make a certain class
of Jews, those to whom Judaism
meant nothing, feel freer to leave
the fold. Hitherto, even many of
these Jews thought it disloyal
and base to leave their people
while it was. so to speak, being
besieged by the enemy. There is
a natural instinct for the perpetu
ation of one's people, just as there
is the natural instinct for survival
of an individual, but when the
nationhood of a people is estab
lished, the individual feels free
of responsibility in the matter.

“Yes, but there is another as
pect to the question about which
Herzl made no reference,” my
friend went on. “Herzl’s remarks
give the impression that the Jews
would leave the fold, but the fact
is that many non-Jews are being
added to the Jewish fold, as a
result of the establishment of the
Jewish state.”
"What do you mean by that?"
I asked.
“Well,” he replied, “in a given
percentage of the cases of inter
marriage, the ’ non-Jews are ac
cepting Judaism.”
"Why is that?" I asked.
“The establishment of the state
has enhanced the respect for the
Jew and has caused an enhanced
interest in Jewish values. I don’t
mean to say that the establish
ment of the Jewish state is the
sole cause for this, but it is the

daism. Perhaps it is diffusing
and extending it.”
"Have you noticed how in fact
any of the intermarriages work
out?" I asked.
“I suppose the answer to that is
many-sided. In one small town
in the mid-west, I was told, it is
the non-Jewish convert to Juda
ism who is the best Temple mem
ber. But it doesn’t always work
out that way. I heard of a very
strange case recently.
"In this case," he went on, "a
young woman, as a preliminary
to marriage, accepted the faith of
her Jewish husband. She did
this very readily, but after the
wedding, she changed her mind.
“She discovered, she said, that
Judaism meant little to the Jew
ish women with whom she asso
ciated and said she couldn’t get
along without religion, so she de
cided to go back to the church.
"There is no general rule to
guarantee success. This last case,
as you might surmise, was that
of a person to whom dogma was
more important than philosophy.
But there is no general rule."
