UJA COMMISSION GOING
TO ISRAEL
A group of twelve Jewish communed leaders are going to Israel
to confer with Prime Minister Ben Gurion, Finance Minister Eliezer
Kaplan and other government leaders on the immigration and finan
cial needs which the Jewish State will face in 1950.
PLAIN TALK
(Continued from page 1)
We do not think of ourselves
as exiles. We are not only in
America but of it. Nor do we
think of ourselves as itinerant
boarders here. True, there are
people who do not like us even
in this good country; but as Jews
we have lived long enough in his
tory not to expect universal love
in an imperfect world.
Our faith is in the democratic
process which is even now in
ferment toward a time when
every man shall be respected, or
xeviled, for himself alone and
none judged by his creed, race or
color.
America is our Zion—a place
of ingathering for the millions of
mankind who carry the dream of
a good life here and now. Yet
we applaud your Zion, dear Mr.
Ben Gurion. You, too, strive to
ward a good and free way of life
for all the people in your land.
We feel kin to you as people who
toil toward the same mountain
top that is the goal of America; j
of course, we feel kin to you, be-'
sides, as men and women who
belong to our history as Jews and
who share with us the inherit- i
ance of Jewish ethical teaching. !
Yet we can never consider our
selves as having any, except a
historic, part in the national iden
tity of Israel. Israel cannot be
for us a second nation or another
homeland. We shall know it as a
brother in the human-kind, as a
favorite brother who is of our
history and our travails.
We shall keep on being gener-'
ous in our help to Israel toward
the time when Israel will be go
ing on his own feet. We shall
be concerned with making good
the lives of the displaced who
have found placement in Israel.
A lot of us will be making
trips to Israel to delight our eyes
with the goodness of your Zion,
to be like sentimental children
going back for a brief spell to
play amid the scenes of an old
homestead. But we shall return i
to our homeland, which is Amer
ica, to go on with our main dedi
cation: To bring up our children
that they may be Jews worthy
of America.
You, and other chiefs of Israel,
should know all this in order that
Israel may avoid the error that
attempts to embrace all Jewry in
its nationhood. Let Israel be
content in its function as refuge
for the homeless for whom it
must make homes and establish
ways of livelihood and a good
life.
* * * *
(In conclusion may I suggest a
plenary conference of American
Jews for the purpose of identify
ing ourselves as American Jews
and making explicit our relation
ship to Israel. Yes, a conference
of all kinds of American Jews—
Orthodox, Reform Jews and Con
servatives; Zionists, non-Zionists,
anti-Zionists, Labor Zionists, Miz
rachi Zionists and all other varie
ties. Anyway, it would be an
other of the miracles if all these
kinds could be gotten under one
roof at one time.)

Commission in Paris and travel
with it to Israel.

Jewish Agency for Palestine.
U. S. Delegation
(Continued from Page One)
expressed in the opening speech
before the General Assembly by
Secretary of State Dean Acheson.
As regards the overall peace
settlement, the State Department
is inclined to evaluate this prob
lem in terms of years rather than
months, it was hinted. With the
peace in the hands of the Security
Council and the armistice com
mission, State Department opin
ion is said to veer more and more
toward an indefinite delay in its
efforts to achieve a final and for
mal peace between Israel and its
neighboring states.
The United States hopes that
the economic survey mission will
shortly come through with a
scheme for the temporary solu
tion of the refugee problem on
an economic rather than a politi
cal basis. The first meeting of
the U. N. advisory committee on
refugees held this week express
ed its support of the Secretary-
General’s conviction that the pre
sent Assembly will have to vote
new funds for the continuation of
relief at least through the winter
months.
