country, and to determine the ex
tent of the assistance from Amer
ican Jews that will be required
through the United Jewish Ap
peal in 1950.

The editor of The Southern
Jewish Weekly first became in
timately acquainted with Herbert
Wm. Fishier, whom we knew as
“Kitty” at the University of Flor
ida in 1929, when Fishier was
president of the social fraternity,
Phi Beta Delta, which recently
was combined with Pi Lambda
Phi under the latter name.
“Kitty” was one of the most pop
ular men in the frat house and
on the campus. He made an out
standing record scholastically and
in extra-curricular activities. We
took a particular interest in Hy
mie, as he is known in his home
town of Fernandina, for several
reasons. First there was a nat
ural affinity for him because of
his warm, friendly disposition
and kindly attitude. And then
there was a personal reason
which seemed to draw me toward
him. Hymie was born on Janu
ary 19, 1907 in Pungesti, Rou
mania. My parents lived in the
same town there and were pres
ent at his “briss”. Two years
later the Fishlers came to Amer
ica and settled in Fernandina.
My parents also left Roumania
about the same time and made
their home in Jacksonville. The
families have been life-long
friends.
The son of Morris Fishier and
the late Mrs. Fishier, Hymie is
married to the former Miss Adele
Simon of Jacksonville. A sister,
Margaret, is married to Dr. Joel
Fleet of Jacksonville. A brother,
Sam, is also living here.
After graduating from the Uni
versity of Florida law school,
