RABBI NATHAN KOHEN
FITZGERALD
The Colony City
By E. O. Hobbs, Manager
Fitzgerald Chamber of Commerce
Fitzgerald—located in the very
center of South Georgia has
long been known as The Colony
City, in recognition of its origin
back in 1895, when it was started
as a home for aging Union vet
erans who desired to come south
and live in a more agreeable
climate.
Known for many years as the
only town that celebrated two
Memorial Days—Confederate Me
morial Day on April 26th and
Union Memorial Day on May
30th, Fitzgerald has grown up in
tolerance because its people have
come from almost every state in
the Union.
Many “firsts” are to Fitzger
ald’s credit. It was the first city
in Georgia to have absolutely
free schools for every white citi
zen. It is one of the very few
cities to have had its own water
and electric light plants from the
start and these utilities now pay
more money into the city treas
ury than is received from all
other forms of taxation in the
city.
Another unique feature of Fitz
gerald is its large Fitzgerald He
brew Congregation, which draws
some 300 members from within
100 miles of the city, and which
has long been famous for serving
dinners to its members, and also
for its outstanding leadership,
among whom is the present head
of the Southeastern Regional
B’nai B’rith, Mr. H. R. Kaminsky,
who heads up one of Fitzgerald’s
largest manufacturing plants.
In other words, Fitzgerald,
which, by the way, is the only
city by its name in the United
States—another very unique fea
ture, is on the march and cor
dially invites all others who are
thinking likewise to come and
share its good small town social
and business life.

Gentlemen:
We had a very pleasant talk
with your representative the
other day when he was in Fitz
gerald, and upon his suggestion
we submit a few words in behalf
of our city. We hope you will
find it suitable for your paper.
Naturally, and like most other
small towns, we are seeking new
industries, and we will welcome
inquiries, and assure you that we
will cooperate with those who
might desire to make a change of
location, or to open a new plant.
Best Wishes to All Our Friends
