Page Eight EDITORIAL By Fred A. Stem Reorientation Tcnccrdi Hebreu: The new importance which Jewish leaders the world over have come to attach to the role of Hebrew as a unifying force in Jewish life and as a vital bond between American Jewry and Israel, was decisively outlined at the recent annual dinner of the Histadruth Ivrith of America. He brew Language and Culture As sociation, by Moehe Sharett, Foreign Minister of Israel and Aubrey S. Eban.. Israeli represent ative to the U. X. Both leaders brought home with full force the necessity of giving to Hebrew a primary place in American Jew ish life and pointed to the re sponsibility of every American Jew to learn Hebrew and impart a knowledge of Hebrew cultural values to his children. Mr. Sharett went as far as to prophesy that the American Jew ish community could play a role as vital as that of the Jewish communities* of Babylon. Spain and Poland in the past, if only’ Hebrew were assigned the posi tion it can and must occupy on the Jewish scene. Said Mr. Sharett: “That entails learning Hebrew. It is as simple and ele mentary as all that. If you are too old to begin yourselves, teach it to your children. See that they learn it, but see that the:.' do so properly and are really able to enjoy it. I make bold to tell you that I do not know today of an effort on the part of Jews any where which is so rewarding as the learning of that one language of the Jewish people.” Mr. Eban with his usual clarity and incisiveness pointed up the role which Hebrew is destined to play in making for a mutually beneficial and fructifying rela tionship between American Jewry and Israel. ‘The existence and development of the Hebrew movement,” said Mr. Eban, “is not a marginal problem of Amer ican Jewish life but may within our own generation become a crucial and decisive issue in American - Israel relationships.” He warned that “unless we can create within a matter of de cades a sense of cultural and spiritual affinity, Israel and American Jewry will become foreign to each other.” These statements reveal the deep concern of the leading spirits in world Jewry for the spiritual future of the American Jewish community. Surely, these well meant words of admonition to study Hebrew and to support the Hebrew movement fostered by the Histadruth Ivrith of America, are worthy of the attention of every American Jew. They THE SOUTHERN JEWISH WEEKLY PLMI TALK (Continued from Page One) ; Jewish in other ways than sign ing checks or attending campaign : dinners or being on campaign . committees. It's about* time we ; got a break." [ Jack explained that he wasn’t * projecting the idea for the pur i pose of saving himself some rr.on * ey. He wasn’t minding the money he had to give . . . "Money.” he i said, "is the least a Jew give.” But he said, if during one year, Jews weren't being driven at they might find leisure enough to discover what being Jewish really is all about that being Jewish wasn't just a matter of signing checks and attending campaign dinners. Jack had the idea that during : one year’s rest from drives. Jews ; might re-disccver the main and : true element of being Jewish: [ Jewish religion, that is. Tne spir itual elevation of being Jewish, the ethical ideals of Judaism, : what it means to be Godly, the : prophets and synagogue. He said . all that had been forgotten in the 35 years during which Jews have : j been chased by one big drive 1 after another. "Jack," I said, "you have some thing there." I had just been reading something along the same line in a book by Rabbi Julius Feibelman of New Orleans. It's title: "A Social and Econom ic Study of the New Orleans Jewish Community." It was printed in 1941 but what Rabbi Feibelman was saying then about the dominance of Jewish social services over Jewish religion is true now not only in New Or leans but in most other Jewish communities in the U. S. Rabbi Feibelman said: •‘The dominant influences in the Jew ish community has now changed from the religious to the social. This is a general characteristic throughout the nation today, with ! the possible exception of the ! Catholic group.” ! He didn't think that signing , checks for Jewish social services was enough to keep Jews feel i ing warmly Jewish . . . The im ' agination of the public has neith er caught fire nor blazed into a shared vision. Members of boards J and workers on drives respond to hyper-stimulation of dinner enthusiasm." In that time in New Orleans, Rabbi Feibelman said, the presi dent of the Jewish Federation of New Orleans “had no affiliation with religious or other commun al phases of Jewish life. The pres ident of the Central Relief Com mittee of the Jewish Federation was “unaffiliated with the relig ious community, although he par ticipated in cultural branches of Jewish activity. (Rabbi Feibel man said, though, that these were rare cases.) Jack was persistent toward the idea of a one year's rest from drives . . . "Yes, give 'em all a year's chance to discover why they are Jews," he said, "They may learn that signing a check for a drive isn't all there is to being Jewish." “But, Jack, suppose, during that year they don’t learn a thing.” "Well," he replied, "it's worth trying, anyway. Unless they learn we may as well quit build ing more synagogues." t were victorious in this final de bate by a unanimous 3-0 verdict of the judges. The Pilam team is composed of Edward Siegel and A1 Zalla. They went through the entire tournament undefeated. RARE MENORAH IN HUC.JIR MISI,. j ---*... The beautiful silver Hanukah menorah illustrated above is an example of the skilled workmanship and loving care lavished by Jewish craftsmen on relig ious objects in the Germany of more than a century ago. It is one of the rare objects in the Museum of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, and Dr. Franz Landsberger, curator, calls special atten tion to the miniature tools and utensils which are suspended from fine chains at the base of the menorah. The College-Institute, with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, is participating in a Combined Campaign which seeks f 1-875,000 maintenance fund to support the program of Liberal Judaism to prepare rabbis, cantors and educators, and to provide guidance and relig ious materials to 400 member congregations in 304 L.
