an INDEPENDENT WEEKLY SERVING AMERICAN CITIZENS OF JEWISH FAITH THE OLDEST AND MOST WIDELY CIRCULATED JEWISH PUBLICATION IN THIS TERRITORY VOL. 27 NO. 24 PLAIN TALK BY ALFRED SEGAL OF THIS AND THAT On his semi-annual buying trips to the East, Eli Elias always drops in on me at my desk. He has a department store in Hunt ington Park in the Los Angeles area. And here he was calling on me several weeks ago, and how has it gone with you since the last time. Mr. Elias? First of all, Mr. Elias had cer tain significant Jewish events in his family to report: His grandson Richard had just taken bar mitzvah in Rabbi Magnin’s temple in Los Angles and his granddaughter Nancy had been confirmed in the Westwood Com munity Synagogue. That news showed how the line between Reform and Orthodoxy was getting to be more fluid, Mr. Elias thought. None of the old rigidity any more, and in one family there may be Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Jews without any conflict between the brothers, cousins, uncles and aunts. The Reform temples have, been taking up bar mitzvah which long ago they abolished and re placed by confirmation. And here was Mr. Elias’ grandson at bar mitzvah in the Reform tem ple, thus honoring the Orthodox faith of his forefathers in the temple. So it goes in these times Mr. Elias was saying without any sign of regret. It looked like something all to the good. But that wasn't what Mr. Elias main ly had called to talk about. He had brought along a grandiose idea which he hoped to sell me, and would I please speak to the Jewish people about it? It’s grand sure enough, I said. And who can deny that it should lift up all hearts to see a full size replica of the Statue of Lib erty standing in the harbor of Haifa in Israel. It would be the gift of American Jews to the other Jews in Israel who also have found freedom. That was the idea Mr. Elias had brought to me. He himself discovered the Statue of Liberty all of a sudden one morning long ago. He was an immigrant on a ship approaching these shores (Continued on Page Eight) U. S. Entry Into Korean Conflict Affects Evacuation of Jewish Refugees From Far East WASHINGTON (JTA)—Further evacuation of Jewish refugees from Shanghai and the Far East was considered unlikely here this week following President Truman's declaration of armed intervention in the Korean war. Only a few hundred Jewish refugees, most of them aged and handicapped, remain in that area, it was learned this week from State Department sources. The Jewish population in Korea is negligible and includes only a few shop-keepers in Seoul and Fusan. There are believed to be no World War II refugees in Southern Korea other than a few who entered from Russian terri tory and settled in the American supported republic. The Israel charge d’affaires here, Moshe Keren, was called to ZOA PRES. Merwin Hart Loses Support From Big Business Merwin K. Hart's anti-Semitic activities have caused leading business firms, which in the past have been misled into supporting his National Economic Council, to repudiate him and withdraw their support, it was revealed today by the Anti-Defamation League. The swing-away from Hart and the National Economic Council began as a result of the account of his anti-Semitic activities pub lished in “A Measure of Free dom” by Arnold Forster, the ADL’s national survey of preju dice in the United States. It has since been accelerated by the re velations of the Buchanan Com mittee’s Congressional lobbying investigation before which Hart was forced to testify. Among the large organizations which have repudiated Hart are the Jos. Sch litz Brewing Co., the Gulf Oil Co., the Mohawk Carpet Mills, Rem ington Rand and Royal Type writer Co. In a scathing denunciation of Hart, Erwin C. Uihlein, president of the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Com pany, declared: “Neither Hart nor the Council can expect to re ceive contributions from us. We made an innocent mistake last the State Department this week and presented with a copy of the text of President Truman’s an nouncement of American entry into the Korean war. Israel’s hopes of obtaining defensive arms from the United States were con siderably dimmed as a result of America’s active entrance into the Far Eastern conflict. JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, FRIDAY, JULY 7, 1950 year in giving the Council SSOO. Frankly, we were misled by Hart’s plea that this organization was just fighting the menace of communism. Certainly, we would never have backed either the Council or Hart if we had known of its anti-Semitic activities, be cause racial and religious preju dice is abhorent to me personally and to all those who are associ ated with our company. We have, in the past, given large sums to human relations causes and to the fight against totalitarianism. The comparatively small sum given to the National Economic Council last year is the only one and it is the last contribution we will ever make.” B'nai B'rith President Calls On Members to Give Jobs to Incoming Displaced Persons Washington, D.C. President Frank Goldman of B’nai B’rith today called upon B’nai B’rith members who are employers to give jobs to Displaced Persons who are arriving in this country. “The rapid placement of these newcomers in jobs is the keystone of an effective immigration ad justment program,” he declared in a letter which was sent to the presidents of B’nai B’rith’s 1,500 men’s lodges and women’s chap ters in the United States. He added that the enactment of the new liberalized DP bill is an im mediate challenge to organize local campaigns among employ ers to find jobs for these immig rants. CHRISTIAN LEADERS CALL FOB WOHLD SUPPORT TO ISRAEL CHICAGO, ILL. Christian leaders throughout the country, in messages addressed to the 53rd Annual Convention of the Zion ist Organization of America, meeting at the Stevens Hotel here, hailed the "miraculous" accomplishments of the State of Israel, aided by the efforts of organized American Zionism, as a decisive influence towards world peace and a vital factor in the uplifting of cultural economic standards in the Middle East. Ku Klux Klan Opens Drive to Enroll 3,509 Members Among Government Workers WASHINGTON, (JTA) —The Ku Klux Klan has opened a re cruiting drive in Washington to organize 3,500 members from among government workers, it was learned this week . Recruiting organizers have ar rived here from Atlanta, Ga., it was reliably reported. This de velopment follows a preliminary visit made here recently by Sam uel Roper, former police officer who is Imperial Wizard of the Association of Georgia Klans. Roper was told by sympathizers here that 3,500 new members could easily be enlisted here in less than 60 days. A tentative goal has been set at that figure. A NAZI BACKET By Nathan Ziprin Jewish publishers and book sellers in the United States have recently disclosed a Nazi racket which merits the attention of the Jewish community in America. In recent months the Jewish book market was flooded with volumes published in Germany and Austria. For a time the im pression existed that the books were reprints of old and well known editions and that they were produced by Jewish printers and pub lishers in Germany and Austria. It now appears that the whole business is a fraud. These books have been put out by pon-Jews and by non-Jewish publishing houses. Simply speaking, it means that the Nazis in Germany and Austria have gone into the “busi ness” of reprinting sacred Jewish books and exporting them to the United States for profit. This is a despicaple affair for more than one reason. In the first place it is a vile method of competing with legitimate Jewish publishers and a desecration of the sacred words in the books. It is a certainty that these books could not have been produced by Germans unless they were in possession of plates and other para phernalia stolen by the Nazis from Jewish printers and publishing houses. We hope Jewish book buyers will be on guard against this filthy trap. The Reverend Dr. John Haynes Holmes, Minister Emeritus of the Community Church of New York and well-known liberal, declared that ‘the independence of Israel marks the climax and culmina tion of the heroic labors of un selfish and sorely stricken men for restoration of the Jewish homeland,” adding that this con stitutes “one of the supreme achievements in human history which may well stir the gratitude and rejoicing of Gentiles as well as Jews.” His message continues: "The foundations of the new Israel must be laid firm and sure, that the homeland may endure far into the future as one of human ity's splendid monuments. More and more must this new country challenge the support of all men who believe in freedom and de mocracy. I am learning to think of Israel as destined to be a model society which will teach us all the true way of righteous ness and peace. Once again will the Jews become the ethical lead ers of the race. Here, in a future not too distant, we shall see the dreams of Israel fulfilled to the greater glory of us all. Let this occasion be a renewed dedica tion to the cause of Zion and the hopes of men everywhere who dare to dream and see visions, and then by their own dedication of hand and heart, make them to come true." Dr. Bryn J. Hovde, of New York, president of the New School for Social Research, in extending his “personal good wishes and esteem” to the ZOA convention, stated that “in these years you have been primarily (Continued on Page Eight) $3.00 A YEAR
