AMERICAN LEGION FIGHTS COMMUNISM (Continued from Page Three) 4) The editor of a large Jewish monthly magazine spon sored a pro-Soviet series of articles which we stopped in its tracks. But there hfe is, still editing, and unmolested. 5) In a top position of a Jewish national organization—a post which involves travel to Europe and Asia—is a man iden tified in sworn public and totally unanswered testimony as a member of a Soviet spy ring. 6) Thirty Jewish Center workers of Chicago are featured in the Communist “Daily Worker” as demanding the with drawal of our troops in Korea, and the seating of Red China in the U. N. They demand this “as Jews.” Recently, the Na tional Association of Jewish Center Workers passed a resolu tion supporting the Red-dominated office workers’ union. These are only examples. We would like to give the full facts to responsible leaders who wish to act immediately—not in 1958 or 1965. We don’t find it pleasant constantly to be the bearers of bad tidings. Some ancient tribes chopped off the heads of messengers of ill tidings. We note similar reactions today. But if we, a group of citizens of some standing and re sponsibility aware of the seriousness of our statements, can be of service to some impartial committee of Jews who are not linked emotionally with the present leadership of our organizations, we shall feel richly rewarded. In any event, we are just beginning to fight. We expect to be even more persevering for God and country, in the im mediate future. Very sincerely yours, Rabbi Benjamin Schultz Executive Director SCHOOL TIME (Continued from Page Three) of the world to the unscrupulous, the ignoble, the wicked. Above all, we must live. Above all, the Jewish people must live. Death is futility. It is something which at best is merely negative. It can delight no benevolent Creator. What artist can take joy in seeing one of his canvasses rubbed out?” "Yes, yes," continued Rabbi Jo hanan, "it seems to me. if I could contact the Roman leaders, we might—we might—yet live." “I must warn you,” said Elisha, “you take your life in your hands if you make any contacts with the Romans. If the leaders of the Jewish defense capture you, you will be a dead man.” "A dead man!" exclaimed Rab bi Johanan ben Zakkai. "Yes. that's it. I will be a dead man. Maybe that way I can save the Jewish people. Thank you, my good friend Elisha, thank you for the idea." Elisha looked on in amazement, as Rabbi Johanan walked away. He was transformed from a man of sorrowful meditation to one now animated by some dynamic plan. Near the gate, a Jewish sentry looked up as a wagon bearing a coffin approached. The sight of a coffin hardly disturbed him. He had been seeing so many lately. Nevertheless, he stopped the wagon. “Where are you going with that dead man?” he asked. "My master." replied the driver, "made his dying request that his body be interred with the other dead of his family in the little graveyard outside the gate." “Is not the whole country a graveyard?” said the sentry. “The enemy outside of the gate may not grant permission.” “But surely,” said the driver, “the enemy will not object to putting a dead man in the ground.” "Then go if thou wilt." said the Jewish sentry. The wagon with the coffin moved beyond the gate and had The H. & W. B. Drew Co. —Manufacturing Stationers— Sanitary Supplies Artist fc Sign Materials 80 W. The eyes of Rabbi Jo hanan ben Zakkai lit up with a half smile. "Jupiter Pluvius," exclaimed the Reman soldier, "I hm bewitched. A dead man come to life!" “Allay thy concern,” said Rabbi Johanan ben Zakkai. “I am not dead, but I have taken this means of getting out of Judea that I might communicate with your commanding general. I am Rab bi Johanan ben Zakkai. Please tell your commander that I re quest an audience.” "Yes, I have heard of thee," said the Roman General. "I must admit that you have not been one of the war fanatics, and for that I will be disposed to grant any request of yours, if it be reason able." Rabbi Johanan bemZakkai said that he had come merely to ask if he might start a school in Jabneh. The Roman general stared at him. "Did you say you want to start a school?" “Yes, your excellency.” "Well. I can't see any objections to that," said the Roman com mander. Rabbi Johanan soon obtained a parchment from the Roman com mander instructing his soldiers not to interfere in any way with the school plans of Rabbi Johan an. As soon as he was out of sight, the general said to his aide, “What a joke that is. That’s a geek for you. I thought he would ask for some lucrative post, may be to let him rule a province in Judea. But all he wants is to start a school. What a laugh.” But it was this school which Rabbi Johanan ben Zakkai found ed, which saved the Jewish peo ple. It kept alive the Torah as a flag when the Jewish nationality’ had been destroyed. It is a long chain between Rabbi Johanan ben Zakkai at Jabneh to modern Israel, but without Jabneh there would not have been the revived Israel. There would have been no people of Israel.
