QUESTION: Why is it custom
ary to adorn Holy Scrolls with
metal crowns? Why do we find
the crown so prominently dis
played in the of the
Scrolls as well as on the velvet
draperies that adorn the Ark
where the Scrolls are kept? (S.
S. - Savannah, Ga.)
ANSWER: In displaying the
crown in the ornamentations that
drape and cover the Holy Scroll
which contains the Divine Com
mandments, we show that no ab
solute monarchy is recognized
save the Lord himself. There
fore, when man erroneously
makes laws that are contradictory
to that of the Divine Law the
people of Israel have always ad
hered to the Divine Law. An in
teresting fact is disclosed by some
writers who point out that the 613
commandments found in the Holy
Scroll plus the seven added by
the rabbis make a total of 620.
It so happens that the Hebrew
word for crown (Keser) has the
numerical equivalent of 620, indi
cating that the commandments of
Israel were meant to be a crown
ing feature of the faith of the

QUESTION: Why is it custom
ary to give a proselyte the name
of Abraham? (T. T„ Palatka, Fla.)
ANSWER: Abraham, the # first
Jew, was really a proselyte him
self. He changed his faith from
that of his father’s to the faith
which later came to be called the
faith of Israel. A male convert
to the Jewish faith is thus given
the name Abraham just in case
any Jew by birth should question
his rank in Israel. The convert
can always point to the fact that
the very first Jew was himself a
convert and that he has the dis
tinction of coming to the faith, in
the very same manner as the
common ancestor of all Jews.
This certainly was a commend
able method of making all Jews
feel equal.

Rabbi Marius Ranson
(Continued from Page 6)
to continue. And we must begin
here in Fort Lauderdale!”
Several apartment house own
ers who had previously refused to
accomodate Jews who applied for
rental, removed the sign “re
stricted clientele” from their
premises and stated that this was
partly due to their admiration of
the brotherhood exhibited by the
Christian minister and the rabbi.
Several Sundays later Rabbi
Ranson preached the sermon in
the Park Temple Methodist
Church of Fort Lauderdale, the
first Rabbi ever to preach in any
Christian church of Fort Lauder
dale, possibly the first to preach
in any Christian church in Flor
ida.
When this correspondent asked
Rabbi Ranson for a short formula
descriptive of his philosophy he
replied:
“I made up my mind, when I
went to Fort Lauderdale and
Hollywood, that regardless of the
particular problems and indica
tions of anti-Semitism, that there
must be many thousands of high
minded and God-loving Chris
tians in these communities. I am
happy to state that my optimism
was not misplaced. The heart of
America is as sound in Fort
Lauderdale as elsewhere in our
great country. It has been my
policy to acquaint the good Chris
tians of Fort Lauderdale with the
facts and I have endeavored to
challenge them to fight the anti-
Semitism in our midst. Cold in
difference is the great enemy
here as elsewhere. Melting the ice
of indifference has been our
problem.
“Problem Number Two has
been the strategic position of the
Real Estate Board. Every com
munity has some special type of
organization o f anti-Semetic
forces, and in Fort Lauderdale
the Real Estate Board has “bot
tlenecked” the city against the
settling in Fort Lauderdale of
Jewish families.
“The members of the Real Es
tate Board are unregenerate in
their prejudices and anti-Ameri
can practices. Though the Su
preme Court of the United States
has declared that the so-called
‘restrictive covenants’ are in op
position to the public interest,
these vultures of hypocrisy still
practice their so-called ‘gentle
men’s agreements.’ So far as they
are concerned, we shall have to
wait for the next depression, as
one of the leading Christian min
isters of this community has put
it.
“Meanwhile, however, the truly
American and fine Christian peo
ple of Fort Lauderdale have be
gun to realige that theirs is the
obligation to uphold the ancient
virtues of American democracy.”
