Friday, March 23, 1951 The Jewish Quiz Box BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright, 1951, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) * QUESTION: Why is it custom* ary to withhold the name of a Jewish boy until the circumcision ceremony? (A. F„ Charleston, S. C. ANSWER: There are sources in the -Bible which indicate that names were given even before the circumcision ceremony. However, the custom developed to assign - the name at the circumcision cer emony. A number of reasons are advanced for this. Some point to the fact that Abraham the first Jew, did not receive his complete name until he was circumcised. Until that time his name had been Abram. After the circum cision his name was expanded and completed to Abraham. Qthers claim that it was the intention of those who spread the custom to have the name given in public. The first public appear ance of the child was at the cir cumcision. Others claim that the child is not a complete Jew until the circumcision and thus does not assume a name in Israel until he is complete. These sources explain the fact that early Bible sources indicate the assignment of the name earlier than the cir cumcision by saying that until BEST. WISHES PEARL STREET PHARMACY E. J. After Adam sinned, perfection was only, accomplished after the circumcision to show man that he must perfect himself after he is born. Hence his name is not given him until he was perfected (physically) by the circumcision. * * * « QUESTION: Is the Kohen per mitted to return the five dollars given him for the Pidyon Haben (Redemption Ceremony)? T. T« Savannah, Ga. ANSWER: Indeed, the Kohanim do this quite frequently today. It seems to have been a popular custom even in the days of the Talmud when vfe find that learn ed rabbis like Rabbi Tarfon and Rabbi Chanina, who were Ko hanim, used to return the five dollars to the family as a gift. It should be understood, however, that the Kohen is giving the five dollars as a gift. If the father of the child only presented it to the Kohen as a loan, the child would not be con sidered redeemed. The Talmud (Bechoroth 51b) cites the case of Rabbi Chanina who told the father, who indicated that he ex pected the money back, that his child could not be considered redeemed under such circum stances. you f ra vel Wherever i,HIW use the expert, free services of the Wharton Travel Service 208 W.
