this period was 31. This indicated
that on some 33rd day there was
an end to the slaughter. Thus the
33rd day is considered a festival
to indicate that there was a limit,
to Jewish persecution.
Others claim that Bar Kochba
defeated the Romans on this day
during his unsuccessful revolt
against them in 135 C. E. Others
claim this to be the birthday and
the day of the death of the great
Rabbi Simeon Ben Yochai who is
regarded as the author of the
Cabbalists’s text “Zohar.” In
many sources it is called the
“scholar’s festival” because the
events that made it great seemed
to have dealt with scholars of one
kind or another.

QUESTION: Why is it cus
tomary for the children to play
with bows and arrows on this
day?
ANSWER: An interesting va
riety of reasons are offered. Most
interesting, perhaps, is one which
claims that the custom symbolizes
the deception which Rabbi Si
meon Ben Yochai’s students em
ployed to outwit the guards who
looked for him. He had been hid
ing in a cave. Whenever his stu
dents came to him for study they
would carry bows and arrows into
the forest to give the appearance
of archers on a hunt.

RABBI SOLOMON J. SHARFMAN
Religious education and prac
tices, future Israel endeavors and
spiritual contributions to the na
tional mobilization program will
be considered at the 15th annual
convention of the Rabbinical
Council of America, May 28th,
29th and 30th at the Breakers
Hotel in Atlantic City, N. J. Most
of the Council’s 450 members and
their families from all parts of
the country are expected at the
Convention.
Rabbi Samuel Berliant of Jack
son Heights, N. Y., president of
the council, yesterday announced
the appointment of Rabbi Solo
mon J. Sharfman as general
chairman of the convention com
mittee. Rabbi Sharfman is spiri
tual leader of Young Israel Con
gregation of Flatbush and record
ing secretary of the Rabbinical
Council.
Zionist Moods
All indications point to the fact
that the world Zionist Congress
will not be held at the end of
July, as officially announced, but
will probably take place in No
vember or December, after the
High Holidays . . . This prompted
the Zionist Organization of Amer
ica to decide to hold its annual
convention in June ... Originally,
the question as to whether to hold
the Z.O.A. comrention before or
after the World Zionist Congress
was an issue in the ranks of the
Z.O.A. leadership ... Some want
ed the convention to take place
prior to the Zionist Congress,
while others insisted that the
Z.O.A. parley should take place
after the delegates return from
the Congress ... There were good
arguments for and against each
side . . . However, now the issue
has ceased to exist since it be
came obvious that the Congress
is not likely to be convened dur
ing the summer months ... Don’t
be surprised to see the names of
Dr. Abba Hillel Silver and Dr.
Emanuel Neumann on the recep
tion committee for Premier David
Ben Gurion . . . Although the Is
raeli Premier and Dr. Silver do
not see eye to eye on many a
basic issue, the latter agreed to
serve on the reception committee
... However, he will not be in the
United States anyway during Ben
Gurion’s visit here, since, he is
now on a month’s visit in
Israel . . .

DEFENDING AMERICA AS JEWS
(Continued from Page Three)
the anti-democratic forces abroad and at home ... If then In
every sense we defend ourselves, without fear or favor,
against the anti-Semitic forces, we are not only defending
ourselves but we are defending the American way of life
which anti-Semitism imperils even more than it imperils us."
Had Dr. Wise lived during the establishment of the state
of Israel, he no doubt would have added: “And now that
American Jewry is prospering, it behooves all of us who be
lieve in the democratic way of life to give every possible aid
to the newest of the world’s free countries, for just as we, as
a minority group in America, are a link in the chain that binds
us to our sacred traditions here, so must all democratic coun
tries join together in a chain to strengthen freedom through
out the world, and those of us who add to the structure for
freedom anywhere else are likewise building a stronger foun
dation for those same principles.”
