JEWISH LEADER FEARS ISRAEL
IMPACT MAY LESSEN
JUDAISM IN U. S.
NEW YORK, (AJP) Dr.
Mordecai M. Kaplan, famous
Jewish scholar, said last week
that there was a danger that the
eventual impact of a re-born Is
rael would be to leave most
American Jews absolved of a
commitment to Judaism.
Dr. Kaplan expressed that fear
in a talk at a city-wide dinner
given him in honor of his 70th
birthday at the Waldorf-Astoria
hotel.
More than 1,500 persons packed
the grand ballroom of the hotel
to pay honor to the founder of
the Jewish Reconstructionist
movement.
“In a limited number of Ameri
can Jews, Israel will no doubt
awaken and deepen their Jewish
consciousness, but for the masses
of our people, Israel is liable to
become more and more of a for
eign country to which they will
be grateful for having absolved
them of all commitment to Juda
ism,” the scholar said.
