The churches rise for Him- all
around the world; the powerful
organizations of the sects pro*
claim his deity; the Gospels re
printed in the millions of volumes
keep on telling men the good way
to go. But the world rushes on its
own way to hell.
The Christian world believes m
his Godhood but denies Him in its
works. It to Him on Sun
day and by its works —its hates,
its falsehoods, its prejudices—
slaps Him on Monday and keeps
Him nailed to the cross.
Were I Mr. Curry, desirous of
exalting Jesus among men, my
pamphlet would preach not so
much the duty to believe in His
deity but rather to set Him up in
His proper place as the moral and
spiritual exemplar for the good
work of the hands and hearts at
men. I could go along with Mr.
Curry on that and maybe give a
contribution for the printing of
pamphlets that teach men to try
to be like Jesus who preached
loving-kindness and a man'# duty
to his neighbors.
Mr. Curry may be resentful of
a Jew trying to tell him about
Jesus. But Jesus is one of mine,
nurtured on the same Torah, and
by that I feel qualified to speak
up for a spiritual ancestor who
appears to have been misunder
stood among His followers for
2000 years.
The divided Christians proba
bly can't ever get together on the
theology of Jesus. Some of them
look at His deity one way and
others another way. Some don't
make much of the doctrine of the
immaculate conception and others
consider it basic; there are those
who take literally the mystical
concept of the bread that becomes
His body; others say it is a figure
of speech.
But there is one point of unity
at which Christians of all the
groups could get together as one
body dedicated to making a bet
ter world out of this, to make it
really Christian. I mean the ethi
cal teaching of Jesus.
How could there be any divi
sion of Christians over His Golden
Rule or His Beatitudes which
bless the peace-makers and those
who are persecuted for righteous
ness' sake; or His teaching of
peace which bids pride and vanity
to turn the other cheek?
Mr. Curry could be another
prophet if he preached Jesus as
the noblest example of righteous
ness, making the least of what
men believe about Jesus’ deity,

non-profit organization. The package, containing more than 27i/ 2 pounds
of selected kosher foods is duty-, tax-, and ration-free in Israel, and is
priced at $18.25. CARE and HIAS offices, wrich started accepting
orders in mid-August, urged Americans to place their orders early for
prompt delivery before the High Holy Days. HIAS has been designated
by CARE as the sole Jewish voluntary agency to accept orders for
CARE parcels to Israel.

Jews. But Jews would rejoice.
They would say. Now the peoples
understand that Jesus was an
other teacher of our Testament.
Maybe now they will come to see
that we are all brothers in one
family—all trying to attain the
same mountain top; we by the
Old Testament, they by Jesus'
interpretation of the Old which is
embodied in the New.
