fully respect the right and inte
grity of the Jewish communities
in other countries to develop
their own mode of life and their
indigenous social, economic and
cultural institutions in accord
ance with their own needs and
aspirations. Any weakening of
American Jewry, and disruption
of its communal life, any lower
ing of its sense of security, any
diminution of its status is a defi
nite loss to Jews everywhere and
to Israel in particular.
"The very freedom and secur
ity of American Jews is to us a
guarantee that those of them
who may feel morally impelled
to participate personally and di
rectly in the building up of Is
rael will be able to do so. Our
success or failure depends in a
large measure on our cooperation
with and on the strength of the
great Jewish community of the
United States and we, therefore,
are anxious that nothing should
be said or done which could in
the slightest degree undermine
the sense of security and stabil
ity of American Jewry.
"Wo should like to see Ameri
can Jews come and take part in
our effort. We need their techni

experience, their spirit of enter

gers and technicians. The tasks
which face us in this country are
eminently such as would appeal
to the American genius for tech
nical development and social
progress. But the decision as to
whether they wish to come per
manently or temporarily rests
with the free discretion of each
American Jew himself. It is en
tirely a matter of his own voli
tion. We need Halutzim (Pio
neers) too. Halutzim have come
to us and we believe more will
come not only from those coun
tries where the Jews are oppress
ed but also from countries where
the Jews live a life of freedom
and are equal in status to all
other citizens in their country.
But the essence of Halutzuit is
free choice. They will come from
among those who believe that
their aspirations as human
beings and as Jews can best be
fulfilled by life and work in Is
rael.
"Some friends have enquired
from me the exact import of the
term "Ingathering of Exiles."
This historic phrase from our
literature accurately describes
the current phenomenon of Is
rael's life which is the spontane
ous and wondrous convergence
upon Israel of Jews in need of
home and freedom. The phrase
cannot be regarded as implying
that American Jews should re
gard themselves as deficient in
stability or security or as being
under notice to change their
abode. Our only wish for Ameri
can Jewry is to see it stable, free
and secure. It is our earnest hope
as indicated before that men and
women will come to us from
American Jewry to assist in the
creative epoch of our state build
ing, just as men and women from
many lands immigrated to Amer
ica and built a new civilization
on its shores. This, however, can
only be a voluntary process in
spired by a positive idealism
similar to that which animated
America's founders.
“In conclusion I want to reiter
ate my hope that Israel will con
tinue to be able to cooperate with
a free and secure American Jew
ry in a cause which has won the
admiration and approval and has
enchanced the dignity and pres
tige of every Jew wherever he
lives.”

copy all around. Consider this for
a headline about the story of
Goliath: "David Pitched Against
the Giants."
The Bible is so full of phrases
which make for good newspaper
copy. Its style is compact, terse.
What could be briefer than the
Ten Commandments? And above
all, what makes the Bible such
interesting reading is that it is
not afraid to call a spade a spade.
The New York Times has as its
slogan, “All the News That’s Fit
to Print” but the Bible goes be
yond that. It seemed to hold, if a
thing could happen, it was fit to
print. It was uncensored. The
Bible outshines the modern
newspaper except for one thing.
It has no want ads.
I suppose Mr. Ochs would have
good humoredly dismissed the
idea that he derived any of his
publishing genius from his
Mosaic forebearers. He was
withal a very modest fellow. The
story is told that he hesitated to
enter the New York field, saying
he did not consider himself big
enough, and that a fellow pub
lisher from Chicago said to him,
"If you don't tell anybody, they
won't know it."
I like that story. Mr. Ochs
didn’t tell anybody and, sure
enough, nobody knew it.

NEW YORK CITY (Ajf>)
The Anti-Defamation League’s
brief in answer to the controver

activities, is in preparation and
will be submitted immediately
following the Oct. 21 convention
of the National Commission of
the ADL in Atlantic City.
* Several meetings of the ADL’s
Maclver Committee have been
held during the past three weeks,
but final approval of the brief to
the National Evaluative Commit

Relations Advisory Committee is
not expected before the Oct. 21

Still outstanding was a brief by
the American Jewish Committee,
another group hit in the Maclver
Report which scored duplication

bigotry.
