So when a letter was read at a Trustees’ meeting from Da- Costa, Salvador, and Suasso of fering to raise money in the Jew ish community, accept ed gratefully. The Jews collected a tidy sum but imposed a condi tion. They merely requested that some of their own coreligionists be permitted to sail with their in digent debtors to colonize Geor gia. What audacity! Did they think Jews were better than Catholics? The by-laws specifi 'cally excluded Bapists. Barring out the Jews was simply over looked. Outraged, the Trustees demanded back the commission BEST WISHES TO ALL FULMER'S DRUG STORES PHONE 1179 Corner Orange Ave. and 2nd Street FT. Jewish Intuition Several months later, a second ship docked at Savannah harbor. On board were about 40 Jewish settlers, without permission from the all powerful Board. What could have induced the Jewish committee to charter a boat, knowing full well the hostility of the Trustees? Why did the pas sengers chance a long, perilous ocean voyage without proper au thorization? Perchance they banked on Gen. Olgethorpe’s idealism? Or did they simply play a hunch? The Governor's Dilemma Governor Oglethorpe was dis turbed, and displeased. His first impluse was to send them all back. It is unpleasant to quarrel with a Board, whose sentiments he knew. To allow them to land would be disobeying orders. But his better nature asserted itself. Perhaps his common sense point ed to the absurdity of barring immigrants from a vacant land badly in need of colonists. He THE SOUTHERN JEWISH WEEKLY knew the Spanish enemies in Florida looked with jaundiced eyes upon an English colony set tling on land they claimed. Sur rounded by Indian savages was the tiny Savannah colony, whose very existence was now threaten ed by a fatal epidemic. HU Decision A fatal epidemic! And the col ony without a single doctor! Need we look further for the motive that swayed Gov. Oglethorpe when he heard that the King of Portugal’s physician was on the ship? He decided to let all Jewish passengers land then ask of Lon don to confirm his act. Evidently it took little time to ascertain the value of his Jewish colonists. Long before hearing from the Board, he had already granted to some of them lands in Savannah. The instructions from London were unfavorable. The trustees did not propose “to make a Jew’s colony of Georgia.” The Governor ignored the orders and replied that the Jews were by no means a detriment to the settlement. He also thanked publicly Dr. Samuel Nunez for saving the plague stricken victims of all denomina tions and stamping out the epi demic. For without the refugee from Libson there might not have been enough left to carry on Colonization in Georgia. Miami Dynamite Blast (Continued from Page One) group to aid in maintaining law and order. The most recent blast brought a $1,000.00 offer from the Anti- Defamation League for informa tion leading to the arrests and convictions of the dynamiters. A JWV post offered an additional $300.00 for data. An estimated 44 window panes at the Miami Hebrew School and Congregation were shattered by the blast while another explosion near an unoccupied Negro apart ment project set off a near-riot quelled only by police assur ances that a probe would be undertaken. Two previous blasts aimed at the Negro project caused damages estimated at $20,000.00. Best Wishes To Alt F Cunningham's JEWELERS MIAMI 40 N. E. Ist Ave. Ph. 3-2637 FT. LAUDERDALE 219 S.
