THE SOUTHERN JEWISH WEEKLY
How To Be
98 Years Old
(Continued from Page 3)
son for his longevity any more
than a composer can tell you the
secret of the creation of his har
monies. It is a kind of genius in
itself. Nevertheless*, I asked Mr.
Eisenstein for his secret. He did
not attribute it to dieting. He
eats, he told me, three square
meals a day. He doesn’t smoke,
but that is simply because he has
no desire for it. He believes that
in his case the reason for his long
life is to be found in the fact that
he is always occupied. He doesn’t
believe in doing, he said, as many
old people do —in going to the
park and just looking on. He likes
to be doing something all the
time. In his case, it is doing re
search and writing books.
I am reminded of another Jew,
who lived to be more than 100,
Sir Moses Montefiore. He was oc
cupied in other ways—in philan
thropy. Montefiore was the grand
old man of England, of Jewry. He
gave money and was personally
interested in a thousand causes for
the people’s welfare. When he
died, an English daily commented,
"You can’t sum up such a life in
a sentence or in a bon mot,” and
the English comic weekly, Punch,
replied: "Yes, you can, Bon Mot.”
(Good Moses.)
