Lincoln's Jewish Bankers,
The Whiz Kids of 1860
Who Saved The Union
BY SAM GOODMAN
(An American Jewish Press Feature)
They didn't look like heroes, the brothers Seligman. Frail and
attaired in the tight collars of the 1860's, the Jewish bankers were a
far cry to harried New Yorkers engaged in a war to save Abe Lin
coln's Union and the rugged troops of the Grand Army of the
Republic then getting the daylights whipped out of them by the
Rebs.
And yet—
The fate of the'Union in that
fateful hour of history rested as
much in the matter of finances
as on the soldiers on the battle
field. No less a person than the
eminent American historian,
Prof. W. E. Dodd wrote that “the
achievement of the firm of Selig

It was the Jewish banking firm
of Seligman and Co. which broke
the ice among European bankers
for the Union bonds. It was no
thin sheet of ice. It was hard and
solid as iron. It had to be shat

battlefield would not take place.
The Seligmans won this Battle of
Finance. This made possible the
Gettysburg victory which cele

country to the ideal “of a govern
ment of the people, by the people
and for the people.”
- The fact which Lincoln recog
nized as soon as he became Presi
dent was that the effort to pre
serve the Union was to require
much capital and that the re
sources of capital in those days
were not to be had in America.
The big bankers were European
and the sympathies of Europe
were largely with the new Con
federacy and not with the Union.
When Henry Ward Beecher
was sent over to attempt to win
the British people for the Union,
he found the heckling and hiss
ing of his speeches often drown
ed out his voice. “Thank you for
these interruptions,” he once
said, “it gives me a chance to rest
up.” He got many chances to rest
up.
It was the common people who
flocked to hear Beecher. The
feeling against the Union in offi
cial and aristocratic circles was
even more disturbing. The Uni
ted States to these groups was a
great democratic government
whose very existance threatened
the whole monarchial and aristo
cratic system the world over and
they wished with all their heart
therefore for the break-up of the
Union.
The sword had two edges. If
European bankers felt this way,
the Union would be unable to get
the funds it needed for the war
and the Confederacy on the other
hand would get all the money it
wanted.
Primarily two Jewish banking
houses were responsible for re
versing the attitude of the Euro
pean bankers. The banking
houses of the Seligmans and the
banking firm of August Belmont.
Joseph Seligman and his
younger brother Jesse had im
migrated to the United States
during the panic year 1837, the
same year incidentally in which
August Belmont, a former em
ployee of the Rothchilds had
come to the country.
The Seligmans began their
business career by opening small
stores. One of the brothers open
ed a store in the South. Jesse
opened a store at Watertown, N.
Y. It happened that a young
army officer, Lt. U. S. Grant was
stationed there at the time. Jesse
Seligman and U. S. Grant began
then a friendship which was to
continue through life as Jesse
advanced on the road of financial
success and Ulysses rose on the
military and political ladder.
