A story of a little sociable drink which Jew ish Brigadier Kisch, chief of the British Eighth Army engineers once fixed up for the Nazis on a Fourth of July. The story of a salt water cocktail which saved the Jews of Palestine and brought about the defeat of all the great hopes of the Nazi Marshal Rom mel, the Desert Fox. about whom Hollywood gave us recently a pic ture. If Hollywood wants to make a story about the desert warfare of the second World War, they don't have to go looking to make heroes out of Nazis. There is a better story about the Jewish Brigadier Kisch. It is near El Alamein, Brigadier Kisch is sitting in his tent, sur rounded by his aides. First aide: General, we are all ready. Brigadier Kisch: The Pipes? First aide: All joined, sir. Second aide: They say that Rommel has already notified his agents in Cairo that he will be there in 48 hours. Has even made arrangements for female com pany at Shepherds Hotel. First aide: Sir. shall we flush them for possible leaks? Briga dier Kirsch: (Lights a cigarette and talks out loud as though thinking to himself.) "If they should break through, what a ter rible price we should have to pay. Os course, the Jews of Paleseiine would be completely destroyed. The Nazis would take special de light in that. But that would only be the beginning. If the Nazis win the Middle East, what is to prevent them from making a junction with the Japs from the Far East. The Japs and the Ger mans together—what a hell that would be! First aide: Yes, that’s what the London military commentator said over the radio last night. He declared that the whole Allied cause may be decided in the des ert. But this water may help us. Our soldiers will not be madden ed by thirst. How terrible is thirst! Lack of food may weaken you and make you feel faint but lack of water is maddening. And besides, General, how much more mobile our forces will now be. All those scores of water tank cars can be dispensed with. Second aide: Sir, that was a great idea of yours to lay pipes connecting the army with the Alexandria water works and I must say the Jews in Tel Aviv who have been busy making these pipes have done a good job. Second aide: Sir, it may be a good omen that today is the great holiday of. the Fourth of July. Brigadier Kisch perks his head up and smiles. "Yes, that is a good omen for all freedom loving peoples." First aide: Sir, shall we turn on the water and flush for leaks? Brigadier Kisch: Wail a minute. Let me see. Yes, of course, we must turn on the water, but there is no use of wasting good sweet water for flushing for leaks. Even with pipes, in this part of the world there is never enough sweet water. For flushing for leaks we can use salt water. It may be that the Nazi rats will try to tap in our pipes and if so, they won't like the salt water. The next scene takes place three hours later. First aide: (Very excitedly) General, the Nazis are coming in with their hands high up in the air shouting Kamerad. They are surrendering without any shoot- The Jewish Quiz Box BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright, 1952, Jewish Telegraphic, Agency, Inc.) QUESTION: What is the "Ke- 1 dusha?" ANSWER: “Kedusha” is the term applied to the prayers of sanctification. This represents that section of the daily prayers that sanctify G-d’s name. The es sential part of these prayers are two verses, one from the Book of Isaiah (6:3) which proclaims the well known words: “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of Hosts, etc.” and one from the Book of Ezekiel (3:12) which proclaims “Blessed be the Glory of the Lord, etc.” These are the statements that the two aforementioned prophets heard from the angels in Heaven when they beheld their visions. The fact that the Jew recites these daily raises him to the status of the angels in paying tribute to the Lord. The “Ke dusha” is recited a number of times in the prayers—once, when the prayers pay tribute to the creation of the world and its lu minaries and again in the course of the series of benedictions of the “Shamona Esre.” And again towards the end of the service. Brigadier Kisch smiles: “I had a premonition something like this might happen. What had happened was that the Nazis had tapped in on the pipe line built by General Kisch's men. When they tapped in, they were of course disappointed to find that it was salt water, but crazed by thirst, they could not deny themselves the immediate relief which the salt water afford ed. However, in a few minutes the salt only intensified their thirst, and they began to sur render. And so it was that the first surrender of Rommel’s forces in the desert began—the beginning of their complete collapse. And this day which marked this au spicious beginning was the Fourth of July. QUESTION: Why is the Ke dusha recited at different times? ANSWER: Man in his prayers acts like the angels and earns his reward for testifying to the holi ness of G-d. The Kedusha is par ticularly mentioned when man recites the creation of the world in his prayers so that it does not appear that he worships the crea tions; but rather the Creator, lest he appear to be worshipping the sun, the moon, etc. In the course of the regular benedictions, the Lord is heralded as the protector of the forefathers, and the one who shall resurrect the dead. The third benediction proclaims Him as the being of holiness and : sanctifies his holy name. The rea ! son for the benediction at the end of the daily service is a matter ! of divergent opinions. Some claim that it was originally placed there ! at a time when Jews were for bidden to recite the Kedusha by a hostile monarch and it was thus hidden in the midst of a prayer for redemption at the end of the service.
