Anti-Jewish Campaign Gadiers
Momentum Behind Iron Curtain
NEW YORK, (JTA) The
Communist anti-Jewish campaign
continued to gain momentum this
week in the Soviet Union and in
virtually all countries behind the
Iron Curtain.
Dispatches received here by the
JTA disclosed further arrests in
the Soviet Union of persons ac
cused of espionage as Pravda con
tinued its diatribes against “bour
geois nationalists” and others
having a “psychopathic” urge to
wards foreign things. In this cate
gory it placed the nine doctors
arrested in a “Jewish plot”
against the Soviet leadership.
JTA dispatches from Istanbul
reported that the Communist au
thorities in Rumania were pre
paring to place on trial a number
of Zionists accused of conspiracy
against the State.
Information received by the
JTA in London disclosed that all
property in Hungary belonging to
the Joint Distribution Committee
had been “nationalized” by the

This move followed the arrest
last month of Lajos Stoekler, head
of the Budapest Jewish commu
nity and head of the committee
which administered JDC funds in
Hungary. He was accused of
illegal possession of foreign cur
rency.
Five Jewish members of the
Communist hierarchy fell victims
last week to the new “purge” in
Hungary. They included a cabi
net minister and a high police
official.
The Hungarian Communist re
gime also moved against Israel
last week when it denounced an
attache of the Israel Legation in
Budapest as a spy and demanded
his immediate recall.

CONDEMNATION
Mr. Arthur Lourie, Consul-Gen
eral of Israel in New York and
Deputy Permanent Representative
of Israel to the United States,
speaking on two television pro
grams said that all the evidence
suggests that once again totalitar
ian dictatorship is seeking an out
let for its own inner tensions by
focusing agitation on the crudest
and most ancient of prejudices,
by stirring up passions of anti-
Semitism and by launching a
campaign of slander and incite
ment in Soviet countries against
the Jewish people and Israel.

Preventing Soviet
Massacre of Jews

Soviet anti-Semitism as “a com
plete negation of human rights
and fundamental freedoms,” the
national executive committee of
B’nai B’rith, at its annual meet
ing here, called on the President
of the United States, the Secre
tary of State, Congress, and the
United Nations to join in pre
venting a repetition of the Nazi
destruction of millions of Jews.
Frank Goldman, President of
B’nai B’rith, presided at the
meeting.
Greetings of the organization
were extended to President Eisen
hower upon his assumption of
office, and he was commended
for demanding a liberal revision
of the McCarran-Walter Immigra
tion Act in his State of the Union
message to Congress.
“The godless character of Com
munism,” states the resolution
adopted at the closing session of
the executive committee, “is
again demonstrated by the wilful
destruction of human life. This is
nothing less than coldly calcu
lated genocide.” Expressing deep
concern and anxiety for the fate
of Jewish life behind the Iron
Curtain, the national B’nai B’rith
officials urged Congress to adopt
a resolution condemning the per
secution of Jews in the Soviet
Union and its satellite countries,
request the President and the
Secretary of State “to take ap
propriate measures to dissuade
the Communist government from
persecuting Jews,” and call on
the United Nations to establish a
commission of inquiry to investi
gate the violation of human rights
and “bring the Soviet Union and
its accomplices before the bar of
world-wide opinion and the con
science of the world.”
