QUESTION: Why is the Sab-,
bath known as "Parshas Skeka
lim?" (R. S.. Fort Pierce. Fla.)
ANSWER: On this Sabbath, as
on the Sabbath preceding the be
ginning of the month of Adar in
any Jewish year, or on the Sab
bath which happens to fall on
the first of Adar, a special portion
is read from the Holy Scroll in
addition to the regular reading of
the Sabbath. This is the portion
of the Bible from the Book of
Exodus (33:11-16; which describes
the half-shekel tax which Moses j
was asked to collect from the Is- j
raelites in the desert. This was
first a contribution to the Taber
nacle in the wilderness and later
to the Temple in Jerusalem. The
money thus collected was used
for the purchase of daily public
offerings and for the keeping pf
the Temple. The prophetic por
tion of the week is also a special
one which deals with the repairs
made in the Temple (II Kings II). 1
Since these portions are read on
this Sabbath and they have to do
with the “Shekalim” which are
the half-shekel payments of the
tax, the Sabbath is known as,
“Parshas Shekolim” which means
the “portion of the Shekels” or
“Shabbos Shekolim,” which

QUESTION: Why axe these
special portions read on this Sab
bath?
ANSWER: In days of old, it
was customary to remind the j
public through the form of a spe
cial announcement that it was
time to prepare the Shekalim.
This was done just at this time
, of the year. Today, simple secular
| announcements are discouraged
j and in their place some ritual is
.instituted to sanctify the call for
the Shekalim. Thus, the special
reading which led to the special
name for this Sabbath led the
people to remember their obliga
tions for the half shekel tax.
Others connect this custom to the
festival of Purim. It is known that
Haman, the villain, gave the fool
ish kings of Persia, shekels of
silver for the right to kill the
Jews. He was able to accomplish
this threat, say some commen
taries, because Jews were dis
united. In later years it was ‘
therefore decreed that Jews begin
} collecting their shekels before
j Purim to show that they collect
them as a symbol of public unity
and aid to the cause, before the
i onset of Purim to indicate their
determination towards brother
hood to avoid the threat of out
side persecutions. The shekel in
modern times has been used by
j the Zionists as a means to a poll
tax for voting in the Zionist Con
gress elections. The theme is still
carried out in the synagogue, by
collecting monies for the poor be
fore Purim.

The Abraham
Part of Lincoln j
i
(Continued from Page 3)
Moses named Aaron his head
, priest.
Abraham Lincoln was not a
believer in dogmatic religion, but
the influence of the Bible was
strong on him. Certainly, it help
ed him mound his style. In the j
Gettysburg address, he did not
say, "Eighty-seven years ago,"
but "four score and seven." That's
closer to the Hebraic Scriptural
style.
Abraham Lincoln suggests
many comparisons with the Bible.
The Abraham of the Bible plead
ed with God to spare the evil city
even though it had but one right
eous man. Lincoln too had com
passion. Perhaps it is less black
and white. A thing is either all
black or all white to them. The
Abraham of the Bible knew that
this was not so, that even in the
Sodoms there was some good.
Lincoln also knew this.
Some of the legends about
Abraham of the Bible remind us
of the legends about Lincoln.
Abraham of the Bible was the
son of Terah, an idolalox. who ran
a little shop where you could buy
images and idols.
One day Papa Terah had to
leave the ship—maybe he had to
serve on a jury. Anyway, he left
Abraham to manage the shop.
‘ When he returned, he found all
the gods lying on* the floor,
smashed. He asked Abraham for
an explanation.
"It was like this," said Abra
ham. "the gods got to fighting
among themselves and this was
the result."
“Nonsense,” said Terah, “you
know very well these gods are
made of wood and can’t do any
thing.”
"So." queried Abraham, "why
do you worship them, what kind
of gods are they?"
This is a story from the old
Jewish legends. I think Abraham
Lincoln must have liked this
story.
Prof. Schechter once tried to
demonstrate that the Lincoln way
of telling stories as parables was
similar to the Talmudic way.
Schechter recalled the story about
the clergymen who protested
against General Grant's drinking.
Lincoln is supposed to have asked
the gentlemen of cloth if they
knew where Grant purchased his
whiskey. He would like to send
the other generals some of the
same brand.
Schechter likened this story
with the story told in the Talmud
about the son of an alcoholic
father. Once the son came upon
a drunk lying on the road. He ran
home to bring his father to view
the spectacle, thinking that if the
man once saw what a miserable
sight a drunk was, he would fore
swear drinking. But instead, the
father tried to get the drunk to
tell him where he got such good
wine.
The Talmud story points the
moral that the sight of vice may
not always be therapeutic. The
Lincoln-Grant story on the other
hand, impresses the point that a
man is to be judged by more than
a single defect. But both stories
were used as parables.
