Israel Extends Aid to Flood and
Storm Victims in West Europe
JERUSALEM, (ISI) At the
opening of the session of the
Knesset (Parliament) this week,-
Mr. Joseph Sprinzak, the Speak
er, said that the House could not
proceed with the business of the
day without first expressing deep
emotions of sorrow at the terrible
disaster which has : overtaken
Holland, Britain, and Belgium.
'“Our hearts,” he said, “have
been touched by the magnitude
of tragedy which has overtaken
Holland, which in our own hour
of distress showed us such heart
warming sympathy. There is
need for immediate effective help
*to the victims and I sincerely
hope our Government will find a
w£y of associating Israel with the
aid that will be given. I am sure
it will be in keeping with the
feelings of the Knesset and the
pecple of Israel if a message of
encouragement and sympathy

Mr. Pinhas Lavon, in the name
of the Government told the Knes
set that the Government was
sending 5,000 cases of oranges to
Dutch flood victims. He also re
ported that the Jewish Agency
for Palestine was arranging to
send warm clothing to all of the
victims.
The Minister of Holland in Is
rael, Mr. Mauritz P. Van Karne
beek, who attended the Knesset
(Parliament) session, said that he
was profoundly moved at Israel’s
solicitude for the Dutch people
in their hour of distress.
According to reports, Israel’s
Merchant Navy was not damaged
by the West European storms.

fathers” begun by the Newport
Rhode Island congregation in
greeting George Washington on
his accession to the presidency of
the United States, this week sent
messages of good wishes to Presi
dent Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The message prayed for divine
guidance for the President and
said: “May the God of Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob, of Chaim Weiz
mann and Albert Einstein, guide
and safeguard your destiny in the
portenious years ahead.”

Did you ever give the 19th
chapter of the Book of Leviticus
a careful reading? In verse 15, we
read: “In righteousness shalt thou
judge thy neighbor.” In verse 16,
we read: “ Thou shalt not hate
thy brother in thy heart.” In
verse 18, we read: “Thou shalt
love thy neighbor as thyself: I
am the Lord.”
These three verses epitomize
the task to which we, who work
for the National Conference of
Christians and Jews, have con
secrated ourselves. Careful judg
ment, the avoidance of hostility
toward our fellow creatures, and,
finally, the love of neighbor rep
resent the goals toward which we
strive. <•
This chapter of Leviticus is in
the exact center of the Books of
Moses, and its precepts are at the
very heart of our sacred mission.
We shall seek to fulfill these in
junctions, not for our own vain
glory, but to prove the validity
of the assertion that we find at
the beginning of this remarkable
chapter in Leviticus: “Ye shall
be holy, for I the Lord your God
am holy.” Only through such an
understanding of holiness will
our world achieve true whole
someness.
