And then, with a little embarrassed laugh— “l am of Lebonese extraction, you know.” The Israeli girl who had served as an underground fighter in the war for Israel Independ ence, and had been a heroic nurse in the war with the Arab states, smiled engagingly. “I am very happy to meet you, Miss Atter,” she said. “Perhaps if more of your people could meet our people like this, there would be no more war.” Yael expressed this belief later in an interview with me in the ante-room of the WMBR station . . . “There are two Egyptian stu dents at Washington University where I am studying,” she said. "We are the best of'friends . . . Our relationship is such that I know when they go back to their own country as social workers they will bring back with them a better understanding of the Is raeli and his country . . . ” ’ Yael, who came here to do graduate study in social work, will return to Israel as a com petent product of the great Amer ican education field, and is per forming for Israel and the Ameri can Jewry, a fine pi6ce of public relations work . . . However, the off-the screen remarks were as often is the case—the more engaging ones . . . Virginia is a striking brunette who has made a name for herself nationally as a TV commentator and songstress . . . She approached the soft-voiced Yael a little timidly before the TV interview her share the same interest in Israel as do the rest of the stu dent body . . . “You know, it is amazing,” said Yael, “t h e wonderful feeling everyone seems to have for Israel. Everyplace I go, people ask me about Israel—Jew and non-Jew, and the sympathy is so wonderful to feel. But the American people are wonderful anyhow. Never have I met such a friendly peo ple!” Yael said that the intimate friendliness is what impressed her most about the American peo ple ... In answer to my question she said that things were not ex actly that way in Israel. . . “It is hard to explain,” she said. “In Israel when we heard Jews were coming in through the underground, everyone and any one would risk his life to bring them in . . . The scholarship which was pro vided Yael by the Council of Jew ish Women has been, in most part, that which has made her stay here such a pleasant one . . . It is a very generous scholarship, and one which is a part of a pro gram which distributed approxi mately thirty such scholarships to Jewish students all over the world for study in the United States . . .
