backed by oil interests . . . These
are companies of tremendous
wealth and influence ... Together
with the powerful friends of the
Vatican they are fighting a full
fledged propaganda war against
the five-year-old state of Israel...
Evidence of the intensified activ
ity is the current campaign being
waged by Life and Time maga
zines, and by newspaper filler
material being sent out by the
Friends of the Middle East organ
ization . . .
Against such an array of wealth
and power the Israel sympathi
zer’s only weapon is to make
Congress and the President aware
that there are a host of clear
thinking people who see in Amer
ican support of the Jewish state a
rededication of the high idealism
which motivated the founding of
our own democracy . . .
The speaker also explained the
extent of the harm to Israel the
Arab economic boycott has caused
. . . Actually, trade with Israel
would net the Arab countries mil
lions of dollars in profits ....
However, since Israel needs the
agricultural products she would
buy from the Arab states for her
own development the Arabs are
extending the boycott in as many
directions as possible with the
avowed purpose of killing the
new state economically . . . The
closing of the Suez canal to Israel
ships and to all ships who deal
with Israel has caused Israel loss
of big revenue and has incurred
her added expenses by causing its
ships to add many miles to its sea
journeys from East to West . . .
It definitely is not a bright pic
ture . . .
However, there is hope that

In his Israel Independence Day address
here Sunday night, Marvin Lowenthal,
noted traveler, lecturer and editor of the
American Zionist, painted a gloomy, but
not hopeless picture of Israel-Arab rela
tions ... At the Z.0.A.-Hadassah spon
sored celebration the guest speaker
stressed the need for Zionist membership
to exert needed pressures in Washington
to demonstrate pro-Israel friendship by
the American people . . .
Lowenthal told of the mushrooming
propaganda tactics which are being used
in this country by the Arab potentates,
Secretary of State John Foster
Dulles will be able to affect a
peace between Israel and her
Arab neighbors when he travels
the Middle East this spring . . .
Concessions will have to be made
on both sides ... To date Israel
has been the only nation which
has expressed willingness to ne
gotiate . . . The Arabs have even
refused payment in dollars of
frozen Arab refugee funds now
in Israel banks, Lowenthal said
. . . Yet, the speaker was hopeful.

The human touch of the eve
ning was the presentation of a
picture of the late Dr. Chaim
Weitzmann to Max Rubin for his
untiring work for Zionism and
a personal gift to Mrs. Mildred
Whitman who served as secretary
of the local district this past year
. . . Max and Mildred chose Israel
Independence Day to consumate
their marriage . . . Their many
friends throughout the South wish
them mazel-tov ... Rubin is well
known and respected for his
many-sided community efforts
which made him -a leader in the
Jacksonville Jewish Center and
in the Community Council . . .

as Bernice steps up to over-all

Best wishes to all these dedi
cated women ... May this coming
year be a successful one for all
of them . . ._

Community Center of Charleston,

from Bob Seigel of the Historic
City who expressed “the surprise
of his life” to learn that the Jack

only. He compared the Center of
Jacksonville to that of Charleston
which brings together the Ortho

really a misnomer, as it is really
the “Conservative Synagogue in

his letter with the paragraph: “I

McCarthy Defends Nazi Murderers
(Continued from Page 1)
by Gen. Lucius D. Clay or High
Commissioner John L. McCloy.
Reductions were so sharp that
most of the war criminals are
scheduled for release in a few
years even without a special
mass clemency. Last December a
"Christmas clemency" was ap
plied in many cases.
While the State Department
was agreeing to release the crimi
nals, two of McCarthy’s investiga
tors were in Germany seeking
evidence of State Department
pro-Communism. They were ap
parently not concerned with evi
dence of “softness” toward the
criminals or the failure of the de
nazification program. There is no
evidence that McCarthy considers
pro-Nazism 'to be subversive.
Under the new McCarran-Walter
Immigration Act barriers have
been lifted so that former SS kill
ers can emigrate to the United
States. McCarthy had ample op
portunity to discuss this problem
as he was an honored guest of the
German diplomatic mission here
during a reception for Adenauer.
The Germans crowded around
McCarthy, trying to grasp his
hand or even just to touch him.

later testified against the Nazis
and personally identified the ac
tual murderers who killed his
comrades. When clemency was
extended, Lary said he felt "the
American Government has bowed
to this defense of murderers by
Sen, McCarthy and permitted

The veteran charged that "this
