Friday, October 2, 1953 Arab-Israel Peace Remote, Eban Reports WASHINGTON, (JTA) —.ls rael Ambassador Abba Eban, ad dressing the National Economic Conference for Israel which open ed here this week, indicated that he saw little prospect of peace with the Arabs in the next five years. The three-day conference is sponsored by the organization directing the sale of Israel bonds in the United States. Yet, Pakistan, a Moslem country and one of the few pro-American Asian states, announced its can didature for the seat. However, the vote, which was by secret ballot, provided a clear cut victory for Israel, 37 being cast for her to 30 for Pakistan, and the members of the delega tion felt much relieved. A side light on this affair which may be regarded as a good portent; it was by exactly the same 37 votes that the partition resolution was .passed in the Assembly and' the State of Israel established. Mr. Eban added that Israel’s first bond issue, launched in this coun try in May 1951, brought $160,- 000,000 in new capital to the Jew ish State. The Israel diplomat scored what he as “international in dulgence to the Arab policy of re gional hostility.” He said that signs of reduced tension in other sectors of the world are not evi dent in Ai’ab policy “which finds itself increasingly out of harmony with the conciliatory atmosphere of contemporary international re lations.” Literary Reflections Two distinguished veterans in the Jewish literary world who have greatly contributed to American Jewish culture are now celebrating their 70th birthdays. One is Samuel Niger, the doyen of Jewish literary critics, and the other ■is Harry Sackler, noted playwright and novelist, whose plays were among the best staged by the. Yiddish Art Theatre in New York and by the Habimah in Israel . . . The works of both men are of high literary calibre and each of them is very well qualified for a professorship at any university where courses on Yiddish or Hebrew literature are given . . . Mr. Niger, who immi grated to this country after World War I, has been considered the foremost Jewish critic soi 1 at least 40 years ... He is the author of numerous volumes on Jewish literature which will remain classics. Mr. Sackler, whose works have been published in Yiddish and in Hebrew' in several vol umes, also has to his credit a novel in English, “Festival of Meron,” published in 1935 . . .. Some of his plays have been pro duced as films . . . He is known for his erudition as well as for his literary achievements, and he has mastered English to the same ex tent as Yiddish and Hebrew . . . Both Mr. Niger and Mr. Sackler, are also known for their keen, interest in American Jewish .com munity life ... At one time Mr. Sackler was the secretary of the New York Jewish Kehillah which was organized by the late Dr. Judah L. Magnes . . . During the last ten years he has been with the Joint Distribution Committee . . . Mr. Niger is especially active in the field of Jewish education. . . . The foster mother, Miss H. Van Moorst of Hilversum, in whose care the child was left during the Nazi occupation of Holland, has spirited the child away and re fuses to divulge her whereabouts to the family. The girl is believed to be in a convent. Efforts by the Jewish commu nity to obtain support from the Catholic hierarchy in the Nether lands for the return of the child hqve proved fruitless. Several months ago Dutch Chief Rabbi Justis Tal appealed to the rank ing Catholic bishop, but received a reply which held out little hope of assistance.
