Much of the Jewish nows from the Miami-Miami Beach area this
week concerns race relations problems. One is a Jewish question
with national reprecussions and the other concerns Negroes in this
resort area.
Local Exchange clubs, with
heavy Jewish iweirjbership®, have
taken up the issue of certain
statements attributed v> Harold
Harter, national Exchange club
secretary published in a recent
national magazine article. Harter
is alleged t/> have said that the
Golden Gate, CaJ., club was ad
vocating the lifting of the group’s
color bans and that one reason
why they are so fiery about the
issue is because the club is “95
percent Jews.”
The Miami Beach and Bayshore.
Miami clubs are both running
their own investigations into whet
Harter meant and actually said.
While Negroes have never been
admitted to Miami Beach hotels
there has in the past few years
been a good deal of talk about the
city having to turn down national
conventions because there were
no facilities for the Negro dele
gates. Some hotels have said in
the past that they would break
the color line and accept any
Negroes who asked for lodging.
Now we are told that one of the
largest oceanfront hotels will
within the next week or two start
to taka reservations from Negroes.
Os course this issue is one of the
hottest ever to face Miami Beach
residents and businessmen. This
writer looks for law suits and
much personal haired to be gen
erated if and when the color line
la broken.
Miami Beach’s Mayor Harold
Shapiro and his wife, will lead
a six-weeks tour to Europe and
Israel in early September. Making
the tour with the Mayor will be
about ten Miami Beach couples.
Rabbi Louis Ari Cassal. dean of
the new Oxford School, will re
turn from a lour of Europe in the
next week or two and prepara for
the school's first semestsr this
September. Rabbi Cassel has been
abroad studying the latest teach
ing methods in Switzerland and
even made e side trip to Israel to
examine its new schools.

Proposals to Lessen
Border Tension
Accepted by
Israel
JERUSALEM HSIj lsrael ac
cepted several of the proposals
submitted by the United States,
France and the United Kingdom
on June 20 regarding the tension
on the Israel-Jordan border in a
note to the Three Powers’ em
bassies in Israel last week.
A careful demarcation of the
border has been consistently ad
vocated by the Israel Government
and in accepting this Three Power
proposal, Israel assumes that such
demarcation will entail the liq
uidation of pockets of no-man’s
land which have constituted a
constant source of friction. The
Israel Government likewise en
dorses the suggestion that physi
cal barriers be erected at suitable
points along the border.
The Israel Government express
es its readiness to discuss arrange
ments which would enable Arabs
now residing in the Egyptian-held
Gaza Strip to cross through Israel
territory to Jordan where they
wish to settle.
The reply to the Three Power
suggestions emphasizes that ex
perience has proved that the root
of the difficulties on Israel’s bor
ders is the Arabs’ determination
to maintain a state of war and
campaign of hostility against Is
rael. The primary condition for an
improvement in this situation
would be a strict adherence to the
terms of the Armistice Agreement,
in its entirety, and any proposals
for the improvement of the se
curity situation should be exam
ined in relation to the Armistice
Agreement which is based upon
the principle of direct negotia
tions.

JWV Head Denies Honoring
Roy M. Cohn
National Harry T.
Madiscei of the Jewish War Vet
etass of the USA called upon the
Associated Press "to admit its
error - id repsrtmg that the JWV
was one of those organizations
which presented a testimonial to
, Roy if- Cohn, resigned Chief
Counsel of the Senate Permanent
; Investigations Subcommittee, at a
-New York dinner held July 28th.
In a letter to Robert McLean,
President of the Associated Press,
Mr. Madison pointed out that al
though the Associated Pres; car
ried a follow-up story reporting
that JWV had denied having any
thing to do with the testimonial,
it “in no way represents sufficient
retraction of the original errone
ous statement and is, therefore,
completely unsatisfactory to the
membership of the JWV.”
‘The error has done our organ
ization incalculable harm,” he
said. “In the light of JWV’s long
and consistent stand against Mc-
Carthyism and its opposition to
Senator McCarthy,” Commander
Madison pointed out, “we must
request that the Associated Press
make public an admission of error
that can be publicized to our
members.”
“Only in this way,” he con
tinued, “might we be able to erase
the stigma of being associated
with an ideology that makes a
mockery of human dignity and
the democratic process and which
has unwittingly acted as a major
deternt to effective anti-Commu
nist activity in the United States.”
Commander Madison expressed
confidence that the request would
be complied with to “correct what
we regard as a grievous and very
fortunate error.”
Jewish War Veterans through
out the country recently were
angered and disturbed as they
spotted the A. P. story which had
found its way into newspapers
from coast to coast.
The inaccuracy stemmed from
the fact that a representative of
another group, which presented
a scroll to Mr. Cohn, was intro
duced at the dinner as a member
of the Jewish War Veterans. The
scroll had not the remotest con
nection with JWV.
The Jewish War Veterans of the
USA is the oldest active veterans
organization in the United States.
It was founded to foster the prin
ciples of democracy and freedom
and serve as the Patriotic Voice
of American Jetory.
Israel Ranks Next to U. S.
and Canada in Absorbing
Immigrants
GENEVA, (JTA) A total of
4,676,000 men, women and chil
dren migrated from Western Eur
ope for permanent settlement in
various parts of the world, in
cluding Israel, during thfe period
1946-1953, according to a study
released by the Intergovernmen
tal Committee for European Mi
gration.
The figures show that Israel,
with an absorption of 750,000 in
dividuals from the total, ranked
next to the United States and
Canada in the number of Western
European migrants it took in dur
ing this postwar period. The Uni
ted States absorbed 1,375,600 in
the years 1946-1953, while 772,-
800 settled in Canada.
However, the study points out
that “the nature of the movement
of people to Israel puts that coun
try in a special category which
would make misleading its inclu
sion in any generalization about
migration from Europe.”
