It’s always enheartening to see
young athletes showing great
promise and working their way to
the top of the sports ladder.
This is true in any sport, but
as far as a young Jewish player
is concerned, it is particularly
true in a sport like tennis. For, in
tennis, there was a time when
Jewish players were very scarce,
and it is only recently that we
have begun to see more of them
on the scene.
Such an up-and-coming athlete
is young Alan Silverman of
Brooklyn. Alan, who’ is only 15
years old, looks like he may go
places.
He has already gone places for
his age-group. Recently he cap
tured the. boys’ singles title in the
annual National Junior and Boys
Tennis Tournament. The compe
tition was held at Kalamazoo,
Mich. Next year, Alan is sche
duled to move into the Junior
class.
The interesting thing about his
performance in Michigan was not
merely that he won. It was that
he won with some excellent play
ing and an ability that forecast
greater accomplishments to come.
Alan played in the finals again
st Earl Buchholz of St. Louis. Earl
started off strong and was smash
ing the ball into the corners. He
took the first set, 6-3, and led in
the second set, 4-0. He had won

nine consecutive games from
Alan.
Then Silverman staged a come
back worthy of a top-notch play
er. He took six-straight games to
win the second set, 6-4.
In the third set, Alan once more
dropped behind, and was losing
4-2. Again he rallied, and succeed
ed in scoring a 6-4 triumph in that
set to take the title.
Os course, a lot can happen be
tween now and the time when
Silverman would be eligible to
compete in leading tournaments.
Perhaps he’ll never make the
grade. But no one can say that he
doesn’t show a tremendous
amount of promise.

Hon. J. Edwin Larson
State Insurance Commissioner
and State Fire Marshal
Tallahassee, Florida
Dear Sir:
I am writing in behalf of the
Florida State Federation* of B’nai
B’rith Lodges comprising 19 B’nai
B’rith Lodges and 3,000 members
lopated in communities through
out the State of Florida. B’nai
B’rith is the world’s oldest and
largest Jewish service. organiza
tion, having been founded in 1843,
and is dedicated to the preserva
tion and strengthening of democ
racy in our State and Nation.
I am advised that on August 4,
1954,* you are holding a public
hearing in Tallahassee to discuss
new regulations to be issued pur
suant to statute enacted by the
1953 session of the legislature
governing the sale and use of ex
plosives in this state.
B’nai B’rith was and is most
interested in the unfortunate
wave of bombings and dynamit
ings which occurred in various
parts of our state in 1951, includ
ing extensive dynamiting of syna
gogues in the Greater Miami area.
At the time of these incidents our
organization cooperated with the
law enforcement officers as much
as possible in attempting to ap
prehend the guilty parties, but
we were dismayed to learn and
realize that, through no fault of
their’s, the law enforcement of
ficers were hampered in solving
these crimes because of the lack
of proper control of the sale and
use of dynamite and explosives.
At our 1952 Annual Convention,
we adopted a resolution urging
that the next session of the legis
lature in 1953 enact a stronger
law regulating the sale and use of
dynamite and explosives.
• We were most pleased to note
that the 1953 session of the Flor
ida Legislature enacted s u c h a
measure into the law, and we
commend the Legislature for so
doing. It is outside our province
to suggest the technical provisions
of the regulations to be promul
gated pursuant to the 1953 act,
since we are only a service organ
ization. However, we do wish to
emphasize as strongly as possible
our concern over the importance
of making these regulations as

strong as possible so that the full
letter and spirit of the 1953 Ex

We feel that proper enforce
ment of these Regulations and the
Act will prove a valuable deter
rent against the commission of
any similar crimes in the future
and will invaluably aid and assist
law enforcement officers in ap
prehending any culprits who may
attempt such acts again.
Therefore, we respectfully rec
