publication . . .
As for my current reading I am
beholden to Crown Publishers,
who not only sent us “Blessed Is
The Land,” but also “Ideas and
Opinions” by Albert Einstein . . .
I am still a trifle groggy mum
bling some of the sentences on
philosophy over and over again in
an effort to understand them, but
even through this very heavy
stuff there penetrates a warmness
and human quality that makes
you love the writer without ever
having met him . . .
The biggest surprise of Ein
stein’s collections are the gems of
humor which are included . . .
The book is divided into five
parts, and includes his thinking
on Religion: “A knowledge of the
existence of something we cannot
penetrate, our perceptions of the
profoundest reason and the most
radiant beauty . . . Constitute
true religion, in this sense, and in
this alone, I am a deeply religious
man.” Education: “The school
should develop in the young in
dividual those qualities which are
of value for the welfare of the
commonwealth.” Jewish People:
“The Jews are a community
bound together by ties of blood
and tradition, and not of religion
only; the attitude of the rest of
the world toward them is suffi
cient proof of this. When I came
to Germany fifteen years ago I
discovered for the first time that
I was a Jew, and I owe this dis
covery more to Gentiles than
Jews.”

Although this column was not active
during the summer months, publishers
were kind enough to remember us with
books . . . Consequently our early fall
reading is laid out and waiting . . .
Knowing that I could not do all of the
books at one sitting I loaned the latest
comer “Blessed Is The Land” by Louis
Vara to Ruth (Mrs. Irving) Brukner who
will review it at the November meeting
of the Center Sisterhood . . . Ruth tells
us she is enjoying the book very much
... A fan of Louis Vara, she was from
the beginning, enthusiastic over his latest
exist, any serious conflict will
lead to war.”
Essays and exerpts from speech
es conclude the parts on Germany
and Science . . . There are also
bits on friendship and tributes to
great thinkers . . .
The compilation of the thinking
of the greatest scientific figure of
our time presents to the public a
well-rounded picture of the npted
genius ... Here one finds not only
a mental giant, but a man of great
spiritual force . . . The true value
of a human being Einstein says is
determined primarily by the
measure and the sense in which
he has, attained liberation from
the self. It is evident from his
thoughts which are bound in this
book that the writer himself has
attained the highest degree of
selflessness ... In his essay on
“The World As I See It” he dem
onstrates how his own sense of
social justice has affected his life
. . . His “Time Capsule” is a mas
terpiece of literary simplicity and
profound analysis . . .
“Ideas and Opinions” by Albert
Einstein is a book which will take
me many months to conclude,
and then I think I shall keep it
by my bedside so that I can per
use through it at spare moments
to warm myself in the master’s
word and wit ... It is a good
book to have . . . Crown publish
ers sell it for $4.00 . . .

Mr. Alfred Segal

My dear Mr. Segal:
I want to thank you for the
pleasure you gave me on reading
the “Report on a Wedding” in the
September 10th issue of the
Southern Jewish Weekly.
I, too, am a grandfather and am
looking forward to dancing at my
grand-daughter’s wedding.
After reading about the very
inspirational wedding ceremony
at the Weintraub-Brod wedding
I want nothing more than to have
just such a wedding ceremony for
her.
Can you help me get a copy of
the wedding booklet?
I hesitate to ask you, but it
would mean so much to be able
to have such a ceremony.
Very sincerely yours,
Isadore Shapiro
To Die” by Rose Chapman of Mi
ami; and “The Pride of the Pea
cock” by Ruth Chatterton . . .
The first book is apparently a
self-published chronicle of the
author’s life ... It is a “truth
is stranger than fiction” novel . . .
The second is a much-publicized
novel by a former movie queen,
and deals with the plight of a
child from a broken home . . ,
It is published by Doubleday and
Co. of New York . . .

We are looking forward to read
ing the biography of v Yossele
Rosenblatt written by his son,
Samuel Rosenblatt ... It was sent
to us by Farrar, Straus and Young
of New York . . . Without the time
for a complete reading at present
we were compelled to turn to its
closing pages, for when we were
in Jerusalem we were drawn to
a picture of the closing days of
the great cantor’s life ... It was
said that the magnificent Yossele
arose one morning from his bed,
and looked out from his window
at the awe-inspiring panorama of
the old city, and the praying
tower of King David, which was
visible to him ... So overcome
