By Helen R. Schneider, Director, Southeast Region
Zionist Organization of America
The much discussed, and muchly misunderstood House that the
Zionist Organization of America fostered, built, and is now operating,
stands at One Daniel Frisch Street in Tel Aviv, Israel.
On the street that is named for
the late Daniel Frisch, who in the
first year of his Presidency of
ZOA, passed away with one of
his last thoughts bsing concern
over the movement to which he
had virtually given his life. —on
this very street was built the
House of which Daniel Frisch
dreamed.
When the structure was first
complated American Zionists,
many without thought to the fu
ture, criticized in the strongest
terms. No one dreamed that the
House would be turned into the
vital hub of activity that it is
today.
Mr. Mortimer May, recently re
turned from a trip to Israel, fol
lowing his election as President of
ZOA in New York City, had
nothing but praise for the manner
in which activities are being con
ducted in the House.
And so it is right, that those
among us who are still perhaps a
bit skeptical should have a closer
look, and see what it is, that has
changed this tremendous building
from an empty shell into a bee-

hive of activity.—into a center for
American tourists, a gathering
place for men who serve in Israel
on Foreign Embassies, and a place
for creative expression for the
Israeli citizen.
Let us have a closer look at the
activities for this past month.
Just a day or two ago, a rather
crudely mimeographed program,
on paper, that many of our Amer
ican offices would not consider
fine enough for scratch pads, out
lined activities for the month of
September, reached my desk. But
it would appear that the elegance
of the printing or the grade of
Bond paper stock, is not the im
portant matter, in the case of the
House’s programming.
The month opened with a folk
dance performance in the concert
garden. On September 2. a film
Festival was opened with the
showing of "Faust" in the auditor
ium. On September 4, Shoshana
Damari, so well known and loved
by American audiences, gave a
concert. The next evening, found
Ambassador Abba Eban, speaking
in the Garden, and in the audi
torium, a concert of the "World's
Great Violinists on Records" was
being heard. On the 121 h of Sep
tember, a nine-day celebration of
the "300 Years of American Jew
ry" was opened. Messages were
delivered by Prime Minister Shar
ett; Ministsr of Trade and Indus
try, Peretz Bernstein; and Mr.
Francis H. Russel of the United
Slates Embassy.
This is the caliber of program
ming being done in the ZOA-Dan
iel Frisch House. It is obvious
that it is not material values that
we must look for, but rather the
intrinsic spiritual and cultural
contributions that the House is
making to the life of Israel.
No small measure of credit is
due to its Program & Planning
Chairman, Jacob M. Alkow, for

THi SOUTHERN JEWISH WEEKLY
Jox Community
Council Honored
An award for the best individ
ual year-round community inter
pretation entry of federation ma
terials was presented to the Jew
ish Community Council of Jack
sonville at the 23rd General As
sembly conference of the Council
of Jewish Federations and Wel
fare Funds meeting in Atlantic-
City last week-end it was an
nounced by Julian Freeman,
CJFWF.
A panel of judges evaluated
community entries from all parts
of the United States and Canada
in determining award winners.
The panel was headed by Lewis
Wolff of Paterson, who is a mem
ber of the Advisory Committee on
Campaign and Community Inter
pretation of the CJFWF, as well
as chairman of the Public Rela
tions Committee of the Paterson
Jewish Community Council.
In presenting the awards, Mr.
Wolff said that the Jewish Com
munity Council of Jacksonville
had given outstanding evidence
of a well-balanced interpretive
program, both in terms of overall
message and in the techniques of
handling media. Since the objec
tives and needs of large, medium
and small cities, vary, Mr. Wolff
noted, the Council had also pre
sented 18 other awards for cam
paign and year-round interpreta
tion materials and audio-visual
entries, and outstanding commu
nity newspapers.
who set aside a very comfortable
existence in this country, to pio
neer in the field of Center work,
a field virtually, unknown in Is
rael. Great plaudits are due Dr.
Emanuel Neumann, who had the
foresight and the courage as
chairman of the House, to see to
it that the project received proper
support.
The Zionist Organization of
America points with pride at its
accomplishments in the House.
And despite all of the past critic
ism, urges every American tour
ist to Israel to visit there, and
partake of the satisfaction of see
ing a bit of the cultural values of
American Jewry transmitted to
Israel soil.
These people joining the Tour to
Israel, being sponsored by the
Southeast Region of ZOA, will
have an unusual opportunity to
see the House in action, when
they will participate in the Pass
over Seder, and will be part of
the official proceedings in the
House, during their four-week
stay in Israel, beginning April
4th, 1955.
